Well I did something I never thought I would do on Pool 4. I went in search of suspended walleye. After only a little action the whole length of Bay City Flats rip rap and talking to and keeping an eye on several other boats that were fishing there, it became apparent something was a little different. So I got the heck out of dodge and headed up to the Wisconsin Back channel only to meet a freind who told me all three spots I usually fish were covered with boats most of the morning, Well I tried them and goT bit but no size at all.

After watching fish feeding in Goose Lake(Mostly bass ), I fished the active largemouth till I was bored and then said to myself where have I seen this Walleye Bite problem before. Frankly lots of Lakes and Green Bay and Erie . So after kind of taking into consideration the depths that the flotilla of boats out in front of Rush River/Maiden Rock area,(I saw them from the road as I drove up the Wisconsin side), seemed to be covering I decided to try those depths a little farther North.

It didn’t take long to see that there were tons of fish 5-7 feet below the surface in 11-13 feet of water. (If the fish hadn’t been so congregated or if I had seen anything on the bottom I would have tried lot’s of different depths.) Anyway I ran over to shallower water,(6 ft), and figured out how far back I had to run at speed,(2.5-3MPH), to stay off the bottom. I know about “Precision trolling” and I know there are distances behind the boat that I have run in the past that got me down in that range, but I still like to check since each Lure seems to run differently.

Anyway back out in the 11 foot of water the 6 foot down was the key. The fish that came to the boat were not big keepers , but they were keepers. Then I did a second thing that works some places and I can’t tell you the science, but it works. I went around the outside of the area where the fish were suspended in circles until I found an area that came up to between 6-8 feet and sure enough there were fish there , too. Except now the were at or near the bottom. Had two large fish on in this depth , but I could only guess that they were either walleye or catfish. I was being pretty sloppy at the end of the day and should have played them both a lot smarter, but I basically cranked on them till they came off. Had to run back home tonight to handle an afternoon trip tommorrow. If anybody trys this and has success drop me a PM. Like I said the fish were nothing special but they were keepers.

Great info there MM…. I think that same pattern holds up in the main part of the croix during the summer…. but Ive not had the determination to stick with it till I figured it out…… there is tons of deep water here… and sharp breaks… it just crys out for suspending eyes…..
and as you noted with all the pressure on the bottom fish, the suspending ones are an untouched resource… (for now)

Alot of the time the fish you are fishing at Maiden Rock / Rush area are suppended fish. Say 10-12 ft. down in 14-17ft. of water or 5-7 ft. down in 12-14ft. of water. They think it a lake since its called ”Lake Pepin”, . Whatever works is what we have to do to get the fish. Its always a learning experience when on the water and thats good. A person never wants to quit learning. Thanks for sharing Lawrence. See you on the water. Thanks, Bill
