Had a chance to get out for an evening trip out of the 494 ramp with Roscoe and Nick. We worked some wing dams in the area with a variety fish coming to the boat. Walleye , smallmouth , white bass , sheephead and a small channel cat were caught on cranks or a jig and leech. No great quantity were caught but it was a nice evening till dark. The Minnesota state bird came out in large numbers and they were hungry.

    Dino,
It was good to see you again last night.
Yes it was a very nice evening. My lab Bailey and I got on the water about 4:00pm and headed right for the wingdams. First wingdam produced 2 fish over the 20″ mark. Both came within 10 casts with a chartruese Bomber 5A. I slowed down with plastics and caught one more smaller fish and a handful of white bass. The next few wingies proved to be a little slower with one eye making it to the boat per dam.
I left the wingdams for a bit and went to some backwater cuts down river from the 494 and decided to puts some miles on the new Grappler Shad from Cotton Cordell. I boated 3 walleyes that all came from 6 foot or shallower. I spent the remainder of the evening back on the wingdams to produce about 6 more fish which 4 were over the 20″ mark again. All in all it was a gorgeous night to be on the water.

Anyone that has some kids that are looking for a place to get them some action. Now is the time to take advantage of the white bass that are extremely aggressive as expected this time of year. This bite lasts all the way through early Nov. Some of the better areas right now are around some of the faster moving wingdam areas. Look for the white bass breaking the surface and you have found yourself a spot to camp out on for awhile.

Had a short trip north of the confluence on Sunday morning. Did hit for the grand slam – Catfish, White Bass, Sauger, and Smallie (he he). Nice morning with minimal traffic. Not a ton of action, though.

    Hey deezee.

Where can one get on pool #2. I have been looking for a place up by me, i live in Blaine, to get out on the river to fish. I don’t ahve a trolling motor, so I am kinda of limited to what and where i can fish from. Is there a place where one can gain some knowledge on what lies under the water, or where to go and where not to go. I am going to hook up with brian sanders for more fishing in pool 3 and pool 4. but wanted to go and get it on with the whities again. I was down at the BB/BS event with my little and am kinda hooked on the eye fishing. just looking for a good spot to dump in my 16 ft tri-hull. any ideas.

    thanks

    Shane,

Several locations to get on Pool 2. One of the more popular and well located for this time of year fishing is the 494 bridge in South St. Paul. There is a public access right below the 494 bride. Take Hardman Ave exit off of 494 and follow the signs to the public access. There is some bridge construction going on right now down there but the ramp remains open for launch. There is also a nice ramp up river a bit just south of where the Miss river and Mn river come together. This is located near the town of Lilydale.

We were down on Pool 2 for most of the day yesterday looking for more whities than anything belive it or not. We did tanlge with a few nicer walleyes thorought the day plus nearly 60 white bass. Look for the front and back side of the wingdams to be prime areas for these fish. Watch for them to be busting the surface on shad and you are definately in for a real treat. 1/8 oz jig and a white 3″ grub will do you fine. Other presentations that excel are small crankbaits, spinnerbaits and topwaters.
    Good luck

Boat traffic is minimal, except on the weekends. Even then, I would say it is moderate.
