A couple of real quick questions

    1. Walleyes on lower Lake Pepin. What live bait, jig, crank, trolling presentation do you think will be the best tomorrow? Has anyone had any luck at the point just above Maple Springs this year?
    2. Are the white bass schooling up and going crazy?

    Thanks in advance.

Nevermind. I see there is a tournament this coming weekend. I understand why there is no help.

Ah baloney with that tourney stuff. I’ll help. I’ve been fish the backwaters up near Red Wing this week, prime depths were 2′ – 4′, and just smoked the walleyes on both crawlers and leeches. Both monday and tuesday the crawlers started hot early and by 10 AM the crawlers got going good and the leech bite went to heck.

I’ve not fished Pepin but I’m hearing a slow and inconsistent bite.

Look for areas in the backwaters with the most current you can find and fish SHALLOW. By drifting a split shot rig on a long line behind the boat you can get to these fish consistently.

The rocks along Bay Point, particularly the down stream most point, are holding the best fish. A # 5 jointed was the killer for the whities here.

This isn’t lake info but it shoulod help. I’ll have an official report up in the morning!

The info that I can give you probly won’t help you win any tournaments, but here goes: The last two weekends, we have put in at the Lake City launch and fished the MN side from there down about 5 miles to the trailer park (not sure what the name of the park is). Trolled a lot of cranks (shad raps and wally divers, bright colors) and pulled lindy rigs/spinner rigs with leeches and crawlers. I would agree with James that the bite has been slow and inconsistent. We have caught a few nice (15″-18″ range) saugers, a couple small but legal walleyes, as well as a few northerns (no real monsters), 1 20″ smallie (no camera ), and the assorted white bass, sheephead, and even a few sunfish.
Trolled the flat out to the first break, bumping on and off the break and changing speeds (2-3.5 mph). When we contacted fish, we’d either troll back through or switch to live bait and work the area more thoroughly. Did see some guys pounding one of the points with spinnerbaits, I assume looking for smallies or white bass, but all they got there was a small northern. Didn’t really talk to anyone who was setting the lake on fire, but with the tournament guys out there, it might be a good time to just check out what those guys are doing, and where they are doing it. Good luck if you make it out!

    Here is the skinny:
Started off jigging with leeches and crawlers on some rock piles on the WI side, caught sheephead.
Trolled the sand flat break from Pepin to Bogus Point 10-17ft, caught sheephead.
Jigged and trolled all around above and below Maple Springs, caught sheephead.
Decided we had had enough, no sheephead but a bad sunburn.

Seriously, we did catch a few keeper walleye and 5 northern and 6 whitebass mixed in with the SHEEPHEAD. All of the prefisherman out there should not have followed us around all day. Good luck to those in the tourney this weekend.

Have to agree it is slow on the lower end of lake. Finally got a chance to take a day off in middle of week and I think the fish did too.Spent most of yesterday on lower end of lake with little success. Wish I would have read James and Dustins report before I left. We did manage a few fish but had too really work for them. The great thing was not fighting all the waves from boats. Good luck.

James are you essentially trolling/dragging these split shot rigs or are you anchoring and casting. I have a few spots on pool 3 that may be similar and would like to give it a shot. Thanks!

We’re drifting with them. Basically it’s fishing at its easiest. Today went well too. One 27″, a 25″, 23″ and a two man limit of 15.5″ – 18″ fish for the guys to take home. Same program. I’ll try and get photos plus details up tonight after a quick nap.
