Deep water cranking

I am heading to Lake Kabetogama this Thursday. Sounds like the lake could be in the process of turning over soon. We will probably focus on jigging, but may do some cranking. I am planning on using a 1 to 2 oz weight about 8′ up from my #7 shap rap. Baitcasting rod w/ 6/14 Fireline. From what I am hearing, fish are still in 35′ of water and deeper. I have never cranked this way before, but from the postings of others, I am hoping that it will work. I know to keep a 45 degree angle and to keep the crank bouncing off the bottom. I also expect the fish to be shallower in the early morn and evening-so I only expect to fish this way midday.

Is there anything that I am missing? Any further advice? Thanks

Don’t forget mid-day spinner rigging! As you might recall, the fish I caught in the lake itself came on Gold shiners dragged/slow trolled in and out of varied depths. Wind was a true factor in my success on Kabetogama. DOn’t forget some easy walleye fishing on the Ash river!!! Get there early and troll cranks around the lips of the few deeper (20ft.) holes in the river in 10 – 15ft. of water. Walli-divers were the ticket for us!!! Never forget to ask the locals as well!!!

The owners of our resort were extremely helpful last year and we will get their input again (Harmony Bay-clean cabins, sheltered docks, great guys!). Deep water cranking may be something that people dont spend much time doing up there. If people are getting fish on other techniques, we should here about it-I hope! Plus-we have 3 boats of some good fishermen going-so we should be able to cover some water.
