Me and my dad were enjoying a nice day on pool 14 . we had boated 20 plus walleyes in five hours of fishing wingdams. We were fishing a set of wingdams with no one else around . Then a boat pulled into the dam above us they saw us boat a few fish this is were it goes all wrong. What goes through peoples heads. They came down to the dam we were on and proceded to pull cranks between my boat and the wing dam. My boat is probably 20 feet above the dam we were pitching jigs. We had to stop fishing to let them go by . This happened more than once. I was so mad after the second pass we ended up going home. So be ware if you are on pool 14 if you see a new black Lund crappie edition watch out if you catching fish they might just run you over to. I just don’t under stand with open wingdams all around why you would have to mess with playing bumper boats with someone . I hope all you decent people out there had a better day .

I know it’s a big river, but I would respect a boat working a wingdam, and find one of my own to work. In your instance, I would troll a crank in the opposite direction between him and the wingy, mayby he’d get the message.
June 11, 2007 at 9:30 am #579467I believe I know the boat you speak of jig fan. I’ve had similar experiences with him. We had a bit of a discussion the last time, and I thought he may have learned a thing or two about river etiquette. Guess not.
June 11, 2007 at 12:50 pm #579494I can most certainly sympathize with you. Back in April I had a similar situation develop up in pool 9 where we were working a dam, caught a nice walleye and had a boat anchor right in the middle of the dam we were working. When I politely pointed out to them that we were working the dam I received an extended middle finger and then they moved even closer to the dam so we could not work it. Just last night I was workign a dam here in Dubuque and popped a 21″ walleye just as a boat happened to be going past. He doubled back and anchored on the inside of the dam I was working. He didn’t really bother me as the walleyes were not on the inside but out almost on the end of the dam. I know that I’ve never pulled in on someone right after I’ve seen them catch a fish. If it is a spot that I have never caught fish at before I’ll try it on another trip when it is not being fished.

June 11, 2007 at 2:03 pm #579519If there trolling between you and the wingy cast right behind there boat as they go by you could end up with a few new lures!!
I would have been MAD also.. Some people!
I know its not the right thing to do but I would have been tying up a big weight! And trying to see if I could dent in a smilely face in side of there boat!
June 13, 2007 at 6:16 pm #580321Enough is enough is what I say. I would bounce a jig off his cowl, if this does not get their attention then land one in his boat. A Zara Spook gets peoples attention, I can attest to that. In the past this one bait has not only landed many bass for me, but it also keeps drunks from purposely buzzing my boat and throwing wake into it. Hopefully I will never hook anyone. I am thinking it may sting just a bit to catch two treble hooks attached to a 3/4 ounce bait in the neck while moving 40 or 50 MPH.
June 13, 2007 at 8:31 pm #580360I have never understood the “muscle in on other peoples action” attitude. I don’t want to ruin other peoples fishing and I would hope they wouldn’t want to ruin mine. I just get PO’d thinking about it.
I was on a trolling run the other day down on pool 2. And up ahead of me were some kids who were shore fishing. I didn’t want to crowd them so I veered out deeper to continue past. I knew that if I had stayed in closer I probably would have popped a fish or two because they were on a good spot. But I didn’t because that wouldn’t be cool.
But the dumb guys behind me doing the same run stayed in close, went through the shore guys, and cut off me. And they made sure they didn’t look my way while doing it. Hopefully their trailer had a flat on the way home….

June 16, 2007 at 1:08 pm #581138If it’s the guy I’m thinking of, he’s from the Princeton area I believe. I had one Thursday pull in and anchor right above the spot I was casting, and block my casting lane to the “honey hole”. He promptly caught a 25″ fish, then thanked me for sharing the dam with him.
I was able to maintain my civility, but with some difficulty. I did explain to him calmly that river etiquette does not condone someone horning in on another persons spot. He actually had no idea he was doing something wrong.
Must have been a converted bass fisherman!June 16, 2007 at 6:58 pm #581181Hey John, Princeton guy will be back after seein “pool 14 smokin”…………………….eh
June 16, 2007 at 7:28 pm #581183And this is one reason fishing for Cats keeps me coming back for more. Bugs, Baits and Darkness sure cut down on the competition
Seriously though, I do agree it is not cool at all. Pool 8 has it’s share also. But with that said, there are still a lot of us that have grasped commonsense while learning the river and growing up.

June 16, 2007 at 8:59 pm #581195When i go out on the river i usually multifish walleyes until dark and then chase flatheads. When a trolling boat cuts off my wingdam casting lane i pull out the 8′ heavy cat rod with 80# powerpro & 4 oz no roll sinker and cross cast the trolled lures to catch me some new tackle. I’ve had a couple boats make a second pass but never a third before they get the point.
