Just a quick update for pool 2.

A rare weekend away from Mille Lacs had me on pool 2 early this morning with a good friend of mine. We pretty much ran the same program I reported in my last update. Casting cranks to the face of the wing dams. The key today was to stay on the move.

The water and current has decreased significantly….almost to a normal pool….almost. That allowed us to fish more of the dams, not just the inside corners. Work an area for 15-20 minutes and move. Some areas we were able to connect with several fish, others none! We had a fun mix of eyes, smallmouth, channel cats, one big crappie and some white bass.

I got lucky and boated a very nice eye that measured out at 28.5 All and all a great start to the day. Now it’s back to work on the chores.

    Jon,

Nice fish! How big were the other walleyes, smallies, and cats that you caught?

I was on the Pool 3 wingdams this morning and caught about a dozen walleyes and saugers but only one was legal sized (a 17″). I stayed on the move and fished three-way rigs with spinners and floating raps, and Dubuque rigs but I didn’t find the bigger fish today. I did catch a couple of 8-10″ walleyes that I assume are from the 2002 year class so maybe last years spawn wasn’t a total bust.

    Thanks for the report.

Thanks! The other dozen or so eyes were all 14-18 with one more that was 23. The cat was small (Maybe 3lbs) the SMB were 13-14 inches and the crappie was big enough to think he could swallow a bomber A!!

Dan, I know you like to troll over the face of the dams. I use that method to scout out new areas. Once I find a dam that has fish on it, I’m hooking up and fan casting the area for 15-20 minutes, then it’s time to move. Maybe you are spooking the better fish when trolling??? Just a thought. All of my better fish have come on a long cast.

Thanks for the insight Jon. Perhaps I was spooking the bigger fish Saturday morning. I know you and Dee Zee have written about changing presentations to pick up extra fish from a wingdam once the technique you initially used is no longer producing. I’ll have to improve my ability to cast cranks to the wingdams.

I do like to troll/jig Dubuque rigs parallel to the upstream face of wingdams. It’s a technique my uncle from Dubuque showed me several years ago and it’s been my favorite technique for fishing wingdams ever since. Some days it can be pretty effective but I’m starting to realize that I should be casting more cranks, especially for the bigger fish.

    Thanks Again,

    Dan
