Finding eyes on Sand

I am OK fishing wingdams and rock banks, so my question is what to look for to find eyes on the sand. I mainly fish Pools 13 and 14 from Camanche to Bellevue, Iowa. Is there a DVD out there or a fishing article? We have sand bottom all over so how do I eliminate the bad and find the good? When you are fishing that shallow sand your electronics can’t show to much other than depth can it? As in the past thank you ahead of time for your help.

Here are just a few things I would look for on a sand flat.

    1. Any type of current seam seen above water.
    2. As you are going over it with you electronics look for the bottom to be like a washboard. The washboard effect creates a small current seam underwater behind the hump.
    3. Any type of structure other than sand on bottom, (tree, couple of rocks, etc.)
    4. Clam beds, usally only found after you have caught a couple clams there.

Those are the first things I look for when fishing a sand flat for the first time. If you have one of these features it could be a productive sand flat and if you have more than one all the better.

    Hope this helps

    Thanks Eric,
This gives me a starting point. I like trying at least one new spot every time I go out so I will begin my search. Thanks again.

Also I have noticed a couple of the better sand that I have fished in the past tends to be at the mouth of a river or backwater that dumps into the main channel as well…..always seen it as an ambush spot with close cover near by the relax.

    Battchief,

I’ve had pretty good success on pool 14 on sand bars downstream of islands, especially during higher current times. Don’t overlook sand “dunes” between wingdams either, as these can produce well at times.
