I made it out from 3-8 pm yesterday on pool 2. Initialy went down for a fun trip, or *anything that wants to bite*. I ran up to the Ford dam 1st, the current is really fast right now, but the current seam is excellent on the lock side right now. It didnt take long to notice someone was sitting in the spot I intended to fish. Thy were trowing chartreuce jigs tipped with a fathead and getting a ton of action fo a good period of time. Walleyes, smallies, lots of crappies, and a sheephead or carp here and there. The walleyes appeared to be decent males from that spot, no really big fish.

I started with fishing cats, but everything caught was small so we switched gears to jigging. Our results were very limited with no bait to tip the hook with. We ran down river and fish a few more spots and managed a couple decent males, but the current was so fast it was really difficult to work the shorelines with a jig. Getting frustrated, and close to the end of the trip(boat lights burnt out), I decided to pull some cranks for the heck of it. I dont think my line was in 30 seconds and I already had a big fish on. That fish got off the line, but my partners rod bent over when I was fighting my fish with a 22″ eye. A few minutes later I hit a 20″ walleye, and soon after that we got a 26.5″ walleye.

The fish were in very fast water not too far from the confluence. 6′-10′ is where we were hitting fish. The cranks had to be tuned perfectly to make any progress upstream. The water is down some, but the current speed is up.

    Good luck.

Nice report Dave. It’s funny how sometimes you can be having a slow day and just try something different towards the end, sometimes in frustration, and just start nailing them.

Was out Sunday morning. Caught one 24 inch walleye trolling Grapplers on current seams south of the 494 landing. Also lost one at the boat about the same size.

This morning fished the lower end of the Pool, got one sauger about 21 inches on a purple paddletail fishing timber. The sauger was one of the richest browns I have ever seen. Very beutiful fish!

It sure is fun when you put together a pattern! Look forward to more posts. Thanks

No pattern yet, but then again doing anything with any consistancy has never been my strong suit!

My son and I also got out on Sunday AM. The crankbaits are just starting to get going. My son decided to throw a salt-water “Fish Trap” out into a current seam and got his first-ever walleye. I’ve been meaning to try pitching fish traps for some time so I think we’ve hit on a new bait.

Will be back out Friday AM to give it another go…

Its good to hear some reports from down there. About time those fish start turning on. Looks like its going to be next week before I get a chance to get back out again.

    Martin,
Congrats on your son’s nice walleye. Thats an experience I am sure you will never forget. Many more to come with Dad at the helm!

As the rattle traps go, last spring I had a fantastic stretch with a number of rattle traps. This is one lure that I have just never used all that much for walleyes and it shined for us on a number of occassions last spring yeilding some very nice walleyes to boot!

I’ll chime in here and say that some of the biggest walleyes I have ever seen from p2 have come from Rattle Traps. Being from a family that didn’t have all sorts of money, my brothers and I were on our own when it came to stocking our tackle boxes. Rapala rattle traps are the cheapest thing they sell so we would just stock up on those mothers. I’ve seen many 7+lb fish and 2 10+lb fish caught on that bait.
They are so versatile because you can work them at whatever depth you want and are deadly on a pause worked upstream letting it flutter in the current a bit.
Have one rigged up on one of my crankbait rods for tomorrow morning!

    Hi Steve,

I’m not talking about “Rattle Traps”…I’m talking about “Fish Traps”. They are a salt-water soft plastic bait pitched into kelp beds when you are targeting calico and sand bass. They have a swim-bait style body with a larger paddle tail. Mitch got his walleye on a 5″ Fish Trap…the walleye had the whole thing engulfed. I was impressed.

    Martin,

Sorry, my bad. I got ahead of myself. Thats sounds like a fun bait to fish. Can you post a picture of those Fish Traps?

They look nice, I’ve been using a lot of paddle tails the last couple years, my go to bait for crappies is now a chart. paddle tail, caught a few walleyes off them too, and some other colors.

Those are the ones, Nick…they come in many colors/patterns/sizes. I have used the B-Fish-N jig heads with these…seems to thread on and fish well.

Some of the bass guys use the 10″ size on Lake Casitis (Lake Ca-skunk-us) when fishing for the next world record.

I’ve use those albacore fishing out of San Diego. I had one out this spring, never tried it. I know the bodies are shaped to line up with the “V” shaped heads. How do they line up with the B-fish jig heads? do they catch more debris. I may have to try one of those on Mille lacs for opener. Nice fish by the way

They don’t line up well at all. The body does seem to help keep them from snagging so much in the boulders and rip-rap along the wing-dams.
