    Bust at Da Gut!

I joined Rugbystar today in his boat for what we hoped would be a day filled with hungry post-spawn walleyes. Instead, we fought potent S-SW winds to keep the boat where we wanted to be.

Rugby managed a decent sauger (released) on a 3-way, and all I could muster were 2 small channel cats (released).

We were originally planning to go to Bellevue, but since both of us had limited experience on that pool and we didn’t know when the storms were gonna roll thru later in the day, we opted to head to the pool 11 tailwaters, waters we both know reasonably well.

Best luck was dragging/pitching 3-ways just downstream from the fishing barge. We saw/chatted with only 2 other boats that appeared to be targeting walleyes and saugers, and at the time neither of them had boated any fish. We tried jigging spoons, hair, plastics and pitching cranks in likely seams and near current breaks; but the 3-way w/ minnow is what got our sole sauger.

We wanted to drag double raps down near the Hideway or over in Cassville slough, but the wind was so potent, we were soaked from head to toe while trying to head downriver, while making very slow progress. We did have one exciting moment, I thought Rugby might have had the new state record ‘Eye, but fearing a permanent spot on the wall in his office, she transformed herself into the loveliest 20+ # carp you ever saw!

After deciding to let the wind and waves win, we jigged a little by the barge to finish our tough day. And tough it was, we gave it our all. We got out just ahead of the storms.

Many more days like this, and I’ll need to take up a new pastime…

you will learn to abandon this stae of Iowa at this time of year, shoudve been at lake erie where we caught over 250 walleyes weighing in around 3-7 pounds, what a blast, any ways you should slap on the weight and troll little floating tiger striped rapalas up the middle of the channel, there are great saugers to be had, call me if you need more info 319-362-7324. good fishin charlie

Appreciate the skinny on the saugers ; though I think today our biggest problem were the very strong winds, making control of the boat very challenging.

I have been trolling with leadcore and 3-ways in running sloughs and channel edges; from about now through the summer months, with varied successes on both the sauger and walleye, after the spawn and the waters warm up. I also pull crawlers on spinner harnesses ahead of the wingdams during the summer.

Pardon the sullen tone in the post! I’spose I’m a wee bit grumpy because I had high hopes for today-work and other obligations; along with the weather, have kept me off the water more than I would like.

We finished up the flooring project at my dad’s on Saturday so I was able to make it out on pool 12 at Dubuque on Sunday. I decided to concentrate on fishing wingdams for some of the early post-spawn fish. Actually the strong south wind helped me decide to fish wingdams as it would have been a challenge pulling rapalas with the wind as strong as it was. I actually prefer a south wind for fishing wingdams anyway as it helps in positioning the boat above the dams. I fished 2 wingdams finding a few fish on both. I caught 7 walleyes and a sauger but only had 2 legal size walleyes out of the bunch. The smaller fish seem to show up first on some wingdams and you have to weed through the little ones to get a few keepers. I fished above the dams with a 3-way Dubuque rig with a nightcrawler/bead on my long line and a 3/4 oz jig with shassy shad on my drop line. Most of the fish hit the drop jig. I was a bit rusty at first missing a few good hits and losing a 17 inch fish close to the boat.

The water is still dropping and the current is not bad at all. I was able to get by with 3/4 oz and could have fished with 1/2 oz on one of the dams I fished. I can’t wait to get up to Lansing and pool 9 on Thursday. River conditions should be perfect then and the upcoming wet weather is supposed to be out of here. Bring on the walleyes!

Similar story for me on saturday. Put in at Lynxville, and headed down river. Seemed like every place we hit all we could get was bass. Another week or so and things will be a lot better I think.

What is up with the bass? I didn’t see any on Sunday off of the wingdams I was fishing but we watched a guy Friday night hammer some pretty nice ones in the channel. In 45 minutes or less we saw him catch at least 6 nice bass, mostly LM but one or two SM as well. He had been in that spot for quite a while so who knows how many he ended up catching. At least a couple we saw him catch were in the 3Lb plus range and all looked to be legal size or better. He was casting a crank from the rocks right below L&D 11 on the Wisconsin side of the river at the entrance to O’Leary’s Lake. The bass must be on their pre-spawn feed. I’ve caught them in numbers on the channel shorelines this time of the year in years past but I don’t recall getting them much this early out on the wingdams.
