A Tale of Two Pools..

Saturday I spent most of the day on Pool 4 fishing with TBO/MN. We got on the water at 7AM and started pitching plastics into slack water areas, on sand and clam beds, and some rip rap. We worked out way up to the dam and finally started to find some fish up there. The best presentation was a plain jig head with a fathead. We ended up catching about a dozen fish, most of them short fish and only a couple of Walleyes. The water themperature was a chilly 41 degrees. We also didn’t see much going on until early afternoon so it was a classic spring time bite: you needed some sun on the water to get the fish active. Sleep in!

Today Joe and I tried Pool 2. We launched at the 494 access and started working our way up stream, eventually all the way up to the confluence. It was a beautiful day to be on the water but the fishing was awful. Joe caught a quillback, and that was it. We talked to several other boats and they didn’t have any action either. Water temp was 45 degrees and the level has fallen about 2 feet in the last week. There’s some wood coming down river but it wasn’t bad.

Now on to the Rainy and some Sturgeon fishing!

I spent half a day Sunday on P2 and had similar results. Pitching plastic, hair and blades in a number of different locations,, all south of 494. The water is coming down and the clarity is slowly, slowly improving.

I’m feeling the need for a DeeZee report to make me remember that there are still big walleyes in P2.

I wish I could add some good results to show that there is life yet under water on Pool 2 but it remains pretty darn slow. LAst Friday I spent the day on the water and bumped into a couple smaller walleyes and a pile of white bass. Believe it or not the white bass was very intriguing to see. Typically on Pool 2 for post spawn walleyes, once the white bass start to get remotely active the post spawn walleyes are VERY close behind. My guess the bite should start anyday now with all this warmer weather we have been having. I hate to claim this to a old wives tale suck as “when the lily pads start to blossom, (insert species here ) start biting. Well as old as that may sound, for me it seems once the whities start to go, the walleyes are right there as well….Here is another one for you. Once the carp are wallowing i nthe shallows getting ready to spawn is PRIME time of the walleye feedbag.

At any rate, the good bite is ready to go very shortly IMO and with all the nice weather we are having we are seeting our selves up for a very good wingdam bite to take shape soon as well.

So did you hear the big sigh of relief when we all heard that Steve thinks it’s slow down there too? Good to know that better days are ahead.

Dave B and i managed to pick up there walleyes today near the dam. Other than that we found white bass and a small mouth. Water temps where heading towards 50 degrees this afternoon. Started out about 47 in the morning. I would think the walleye bite should get going soon also. Started looking at a few post spawn spots today.

How many times are we allowed to say “the bite should start soon” before we jinx the entire pool?

We just enjoy giving you a hard time Steve; we know you have the thick skin to take it!

Has anyone starting pulling cranks yet? I would imagine if the temp is approahing 50 degrees a could pound some water to locate fish.
