Just a quick report for those hitting the water in the next few days. If your looking for a few eaters, plastics were working best today. Ringies in any combination of green or blue Doo’s. Look at depths from 11 to 17ft. Both dragging and verticle jigging will put fish in the boat.

Pitching the sand is also a good option. reports of some nice fish coming off the sand. We did not stick any hogs but still we got a few decent fish pitching. Troy with an eye taken pitching the sand.

New boat Don or a buddys? Great seeing that you are back on the water. I miss seeing that as you’ve been busy with the dog training instead. How are you doing? Ready for another great year of open water fishing?
    Thanks, Bill

Bill, I got to fish out of Troy’s Ranger 621. I still have the C-liner. You will have to give me ride in your new Alumacraft. Maybe we can get on the water together this year. Right now I am not training and plan to get back to the fishing. Take care and see you soon, Don.

Just got back from Pool 4. Bite was tough this morning. Out of 200 some boats, we saw less than a dozen fish netted at the mouth of the lock. Better shoreline areas were packed with boats as well. We managed two small walleyes. Weather was nice.

Nice report Don! Did you guys head downstream any? Wondering if things are starting to go down that way?

    Nice job Don.

I didn’t see you out there, no wonder you were in a Ranger

I sent the morning down stream of Red Wing. Only managed 4 fish. It was a tough bite.

    Vandy,
We were fishing right by Don and I didn’t notice it was him till he said something. Not use to seeing him in a Ranger and in the back of the boat and without his pup. The bite for us was pretty good from 9:00 till noon or so then really slowed down. There are some big saugers smacking plastics right now. I was suprised that they wanted more natural colors–our best ringwork color was pro blue followed by firecracker. I’m guessing that the walleyes that didn’t spawn the first time have to be close to going now. Lets hope this weather stays stable and lets them do the deed.

    Thanks for the report Don
Sunday was tough, but two of us managed to catch 35 fish on the day. About 50/50 walleyes-saugers and all on the small side. We stayed away from the boats and seemed increased boat traffic would shut the fish down. All fish came on vertical bite–perch 5/16oz hair jigs tipped with minnows and 1/4 perch blades, including a 20 pound buffalo. As always with the river, it changes daily and a hotspot one day may be cold the next–that’s fishing! 16 feet was the key depth right on the current seam where ever we fished. The fish really smacked the blades.

A blade bait is a flat bait with weight in the front and two trebles that you cast, jig or drag.Zip lure, cicada and of course the B3 blade bait are some examples.Check out the BfishN site to see a pic.

    Greg,
We fished bankers hours Saturday. We didn’t get on the water till 9AM and had to be home for Supper at 6PM. We just had a day of relaxing recreational fishing. Went with the crowds by the Y and caught a bunch of big saugers. It was sure nice to have a day of fishing without high winds or cold temps, I guess I am just getting old and soft!
