Not a ton of reports on Pool 3, so I thought I would chime in. The bite has been very different from day to day, and spot to spot. I got out three times last week with mixed results. I primarily focused on the wing dams from Miley’s south, and in the backwaters. The wing dams are starting to produce some nice fish on three-ways and spinners, as well as crankbaits. The current is down and a lot of the fish are hanging near the deeper end of the wing dam, except for the first and last couple of hours. The biggest fish on the wing dams was 24″, but I lost one at the boat that looked to be about 7 or 8 pounds. The backwaters are putting out varied results from day to day. Most of the fish are coming long-lining cranks. Last Tuesday I caught two that were 25″, but I also caught a number of 16-inchers, which in the past has been uncommon. Father’s Day was a bust for numbers and size, with only 8 fish over 4 hours of fishing with me and the “old man”. The largest was 21 inches. The bite should be very good prior to the onset of the mayfly hatch, so get out there!

Hey Brian, Thanks for the report. When do the mayflies hit up there normally? Thanks, Bill

Usually the peak seems to be around the end of June or early July. Some years there isn’t a real peak, but rather a slow hatch that can last 2 or 3 weeks, other years there is such a peak hatch that I’ve seen them plow the Hastings bridge afer a night of mayfly mating. I’m guessing that weather dictates the intensity of the hatch. the quicker it gets over, the better!
