I made it out on pool 12 at Dubuque this past Saturday morning. Lots of ice, lots of current and dirty water made for an interesting trip out. The roller and tainter gates are still down in the water at the dam but it didn’t seem to slow the current any. We did not make the trip up to the dam but instead opted to fish downstream in a couple locations where the water wasn’t quite so dirty. We probably only fished a total of a couple hours with not so much as a bite. There were a few boats up by the dam but they didn’t have any luck either. I heard of one small sauger being caught on Saturday and that was it. I had also heard that Bellevue was just as bad as not one fish was measured by the DNR on Friday. The river is cresting at Dubuque right now about a foot over where they had predicted it would be. It is right around 10.5 ft now and had only been predicted to get up to 9.5 ft. The good thing is it is supposed to begin falling later today and fall a couple feet or more by the coming weekend. By then the water should be cleaned up and the fishing should get much better. I noticed that yesterday (Sunday) that there was not much ice coming down compared to Saturday. I didn’t fish on Sunday and only noticed one boat out. Saturday may have been a bust when it came to catching fish but it was nice to get out on the water. I’ll be back out this coming weekend.
