Well I was trolling down at the southern section where the channel narrows and hooked on to what I thought was my second legal for the day. Well I pulled up one of the best catches I could think of. No it wasn’t a fish but someones #7 shad rap and it was connected to line with a big old clam attached. The shad rap needs new hooks and a little cleaning and it will be good to go. Finnaly had a day where I was on the plus side and now I don’t need to run to Fleet Farm again.

This very same thing happened to me a couple years back…

I snag into something moveable, yet quite heavy. First comes a # 5 clown shad rap snagged into a huge clam. There was a line attached to the crankbait yet. Lots of it. So I began retrieving all this line hand over hand. I could feel this weight, some slippage, and some movement back to the boat. As I kept pulling, wrapping line around my hand, I got the impression that for every 5 feet of movement back to the boat there was some slipping taking place but I could not put my finger on what it was. Then it dawned on me. Rod and reel! The drag was slipping as I was pulling the whole shooting match through the water as I continued to troll. So I through the boat in reverse and carefully wound up what seemed like a couple miles of line. On the end? A “not so matched” trolling rod that now finds it’s home in Mavzer’s boat as a very capable channel cat rod… and a brand new Daiwa line counter for me!

Every once in a great while the river smiles on all of us!
