two of my buddies and i braved the cold on fri(pm)-sat-sun(am) fishing below the dam at evert’s. we managed to catch a lot of walleye and sauger but had to do lots of sorting to get our fish. we also managed to catch several sturgeon, paddlefish, carp, and catfish. all in all it was a good/fun trip. we caught most of our fish on one-eyes(red, white, & firetiger) jigged in 50 to 30 fow and caught most of the bigger fish on a pink/white 5/8oz bucktail. we never did pick up anything dragging ringies but heard of several nice fish caught around sundown on saturday. only saw about 4 or 5 boats out the whole weekend. with this warmer weather coming it ought to be pretty decent out there so go fish!

Did you guys run into the DNR survival mortality study guy down there this last weekend? If he was there I’m sure he would have liked to get some fish caught from 35 FOW and deeper. It would be interesting to know what the results would be. Thanks for the report!

Any of those cats and sturgeon that actually took the hook, or all accidently foul hooked? I know the paddle fish didnt take the bait(plankton eater)

we saw the boat(DNR) but thought it was a commercial fisherman. we had one sauger that had the air-bladder coming out of it’s mouth and we kept it. the rest of the fish ZIPPED and i mean ZIPPED to the depths when we released them. i was very surprised at the speed considering the water temp (~38 degrees). two of the sturgeon had the lure in the lips(sucker) and the spoonbill had the lure in the bill close to the mouth. everything else was foul hooked (cats, carp, etc.)

Most of the paddlefish I’ve ever caught were snagged accidentally. I have caught 2 paddlefish that hit the baits firmly leaving little doubt that they were A: trying to eat it. B: Trying to kill it with not intentions of actually swallowing the bait.

I don’t think you could ever intentionally target paddlefish with conventional methods and be even marginally successful… but it does happen on rare occassions.
