An 8′ rod will be a little long for a hand-held 3 way rod but should work well, if the action is a moderate / medium as stated, for pulling everything from 3 ways and live bait to 3 ways and stickbaits from the rod holder. You will, of course, be able to fish this rod in the hand in a pinch w/o any issue beyond a sore wrist. If the price is right… big deal.
On the big river where we can run two rods per man I like to use a long “outside rod” positioned slightly ahead of me in the boat… but within EASY reach. My hand-held rods are 7 – 7.5 foot st. croix rods with a moderate action. these rods a are a graphite rod and I like them for their light weight and sensitivity. Coupled with a low-profile casting reel with a flipping switch you’ve got yourself a great set-up for fishing 3 ways.
February 15, 2007 at 4:54 am #537162I run 7 foot premiers with medium heavy action for my hand held rods, they work pretty well for me and the price is right! They also make pretty good inside rods for crank trollin’
February 15, 2007 at 1:26 pm #537198The ones I found are gary Roach special editions but was also curious if MH were to much but figured only time I use them is when I am using 3 way and heavy sinkers so would be fine just didnt wanna have to much backbone ripping jigs out in fast current on the hookups. By the way Jami reeds have them for 30 something a piece but when i first saw them was about 11 at night after happy hour up town and I swore I saw 24.99 that night not 39.99 damn karkov!
February 17, 2007 at 2:30 am #538086I use G-Loomis Crankbait series in medium-light action. Even though I am using heavy sinkers, the rod’s backbone supports it, while the moderate action shows every little tick and bite. I fished with one for 5 minutes with a buddy of mine and was instantly converted. They are worth EVERY penny of the money. Just my 2 cents.

February 17, 2007 at 4:13 am #538133Hey everybody, this site is awesome, I have lurked for years, but would like to start posting some pictures. There is nothing better than a report. Anyway, I have been using 8’6″ for spreading lines with both 3-ways and cranks for a couple years now, and after using the 8″ telescoping with a buddy, I am going to switch to telescoping most likely in the 8′ range. I like to pre-rig ahead of time, and transport and breakdown of the segmented rods can be a bear with leader lengths from leadcore to leader, and leader lengths of 3-way rigs. With the telescoping rods-you can manage rigs kind of like fly fisherman. Just my 2 cents, good luck.
February 17, 2007 at 4:18 am #538138Welcome to the site bud look to see some reports and maybe get together and do some brain storming on the river together some day..you will meet some amazing people on here who know there stuff and learn a TON 5 years ago I laughed when someone said walleye on the river and joined the Walleye searchers and went from there! Look to join back up with them a great group of guys and wonderful way to learn from other and share your tips as well anyways welcome to the site man
February 17, 2007 at 8:19 pm #538277Thanks for the reply and welcome erick. I have almost joined the searchers several times, and hopefully eventually will. I have a 10 month old so things have been pretty busy lately. I would like to fish a couple of the events this summer and plan on fishing the Lake Pepin open. Looks like there are some great sticks in that group. Seems like some of those fellas hang an 8+ fish every tourney. We should meet up sometime, I love to troll, and chuck hair jigs.
February 19, 2007 at 2:47 am #538589So on average between everyone what do you usually have in hand for 3 ways and floaters or stickbaits I personally have always run med. action but am leaning toward med. heavy as well but just hesitant not knowing if the stiffer rod will tear out hooks at hook-up with not as much play in the rod itself….any opinions out there on that
February 19, 2007 at 6:50 pm #538865I only hold one rod at one time, and sometimes I put both in the holders, and I have noticed that without the Loomis’s, the tips are too stiff, and the fish will hit it for a split second, and then drop it because they feel the rod. The loomis’s action is perfect for giving them a little extra time to take it. This is strictly for live-baiting, with stickbaits I use much stiffer rods. My 2 cents.

February 20, 2007 at 5:33 am #539143My go to rods for 3-ways are 7 ft St. Croix Premier med fast tip for the front rod and the same for the back rod except its a med light action St. Croix Premier rod. If need be I will use a 8’6” St. Croix Wild River med rod or even go with a 10’6′ St. Croix Wild River rod if the fish are real turned off. The longer Wild River rods have more give to them so the fish don’t feel the rod. For real heavy bell sinkers the med heavy rods work very well. St. Croix of course. Gotta love em. Great rods.
Thanks, BillFebruary 26, 2007 at 6:16 pm #541665When you guys are saying in the holder and there spitting it are you letting them take it and set them selves or what I have always held the rods and set the hook when I feel a strike but got me curious now if i were to add a stinger to the rod int he holder if I can fish the rig just like a crankbait or anything just let them hook themselves just curious and to many question latly
March 10, 2007 at 3:56 am #547171Hey james you replied to my post on 3 way rods a week or so ago just curious for live bait pulling what rod is in your hand at all times Sully and I have been talkin a lot about it I am thinking I am gonna make a 7 ft MH and a 7 ft M action for different conditions any opinion there also what do you run as your dead stick….figured you run st croix strictly and was just wonderin what models you run..thank you sir
March 10, 2007 at 11:16 pm #547348Just my 2 cents… I prefer a medium action with a softer tip (MHXF)for 3 way fishing. As was stated earlier, that little bit of flex REALLY makes a difference in my humble opinion! I usually run them both in the holders and in hand. I use PowerPro typically to the swivel (because of less drag of line dia) and 3′-6′ of floro to the crank/spinners. In my opinion, MH rods are too stiff.
