I have a few quick questions for you guys. I live in Chippewa Falls, and have never fished the river. I don’t know why, but I just found this web site and am starting to realize what a great resource I am missing out on. Where is the best place to start? I am not real big on trolling, but I love to jig and live bait rig. Any info would be greatly appreciated. If you don’t want to tie up the board you can e-mail me: [email protected] Thanks!!

If you have time go back as far as you can in this forum and start reading. It is loaded with great info. or check out the guides reports as far back as you can. I’ve fished the river for over 30 years and got a great education here last winter. This forum is loaded with great info. Good luck.
May 21, 2003 at 11:47 pm #267169The best advice I can give would be to get out with someone and share tactics and technique. This board has a lot of info, but as with anything on the www, you should take advice with a grain of salt (and use your BS filter when necessary).
I’ve been able to fish with several people I met on here, and I can tell you there isn’t a bad egg in the bunch – or at least they hide it well enough that you’d never know it (like me ).

May 22, 2003 at 12:47 pm #266998Hey Walley1274,
I know where you are coming from. I lived within blocks of the River for three years before I wet a line in it. I moved here from lake country in Northern Wisconsin and just couldn’t get excited about the river. What a mistake! Now my wife can’t get me off of the river. High water, low water, frozen water, it just doesn’t matter. The fishing is fantastic and the fish taste every bit as good as anything I catch up north. I to love to toss jigs. I fish both the back waters and the main channel. I fish day and night. I catch everything from panfish to walleye to carp. My favorite is the striper. Fast action and lots of it. Don’t have to feel guilty keeping a meal as it seems most people just don’t like them anyway. Don’t know why but it’s fine by me. Can find them chasing chad on the wingdams all summer long. Fish all day long and then camp on an island. Fish the next day and do it again. Never run out of new water to try. I don’t think one could find a better place or cheaper trip anywhere. Lastly, this site is addictive. It will keep you awake at night and from your duties by day. It will affect your brain in such a way that you can think of nothing but getting on the river. There is no cure or treatment.May 22, 2003 at 12:54 pm #267025WALLEYE1274
When & where are you planning on fishing the river?
If it is on pool 4 I would start by getting a good map and probably stopping by 4 Seasons Bait in Red Wing. They will get you in the right direction.May 22, 2003 at 6:21 pm #267207Quote:

geeez woolly.. whos Chad and why do they chase him all summer long??May 22, 2003 at 10:11 pm #267221Coming from Wisconsin, stop in at Everts for your launch, talk to steve and see where the fish are biting. A wise investment is to use a guide, there are plenty of excellent ones that you will find by watching their posts. I have taken 3 trips with Dustin the last 3 years, Summer, spring and late spring and have learned different aspects of fishing the river each time. Next year it will be late fall, also buy the video at Everts for using plastics on the river. Like one of the other poster said once you use this site it does get addictive. But the using of a guide sure has help me out and made my fishing experience of my own much better. We pay maoney to fix cars, educate our children at colleges, sports, dance, gymnastics……, spend a little on your self and have some fun and learn. If you have to take the wife, child or girl friend and let them experinece the river.
May 23, 2003 at 4:19 am #267231The great thing about the river is that you cannot be set on anyone tactic. You have read about trolling recently, but that will change throughout the year. In order to catch fish consistantly an angler needs to be versatile.Bring all sorts of stuff (Jigs, Three-WAy-rigs with cranks or floaters, casting equip., leadcore for trolling, fireline for trolling, etc………)
1)Buy maps of the area you want to fish (Fishing Hotspots or something)
2)Find a boat ramp in the area you would like to fish. (Pools 2,3,4,5 etc.)
3)Drive your boat around and note where people are fishing and what techniques they are using.
4)FISH
Or, Better yet go out for a day with one of the FTR staff. I have been told they are great!
