Anyone have anything from Red Wing this week? Id like to be ice fishing, but there isnt safe ice within 2 hours of here, so I might make the trip tomorrow to pool 4. Its about 4 hours, so if youve got any info about the river or the bite, please post.
    thanks

I was out on Sunday with my Father-inlaw and did terrible! It was the first trip since I started fishing down there over 3-4 years ago that I got skunked….well, unless you count a 8″ sauger and a 12# carp. We didn’t arrive early enough to cash in on a good pitching bite, and we only fished plastics. I was there 2 weeks ago and the sauger bite was great on plastic, but the only saugers I seen caught were tiny ones on minnows. I wasn’t about to buy minnows just to catch 12″ saugers. Oh well, better luck next time as they say!

I was out a couple of times last week with Lenny and Chappy, see Lennys report. The pitching bite was a little off, but we did get some nice fish pitching the rocks.

On Sunday we switched it up and went vertical for a couple of hours up by the dam. Best colors for us were catalpa orange, chart pepper, pro blue put a few in the boat as well as firecracker. We were running 5/16 ounce jig heads and drifting with the current. We were connecting with some real nice saugers. All went back to be caught another day!

We were keeping the doos real still about 6″ to a foot off the bottom. Some were smacking the doos, some were just dead weight.

    Hope this helps.

I was out with my brother and daughter Tuesday and the vertical bite was, well, slow to say the least. We couldn’t get anything going expect very small fish. We decided to try dragging ringies in 20-30 feet and started catching nice saugers. We ended the day with a good three man limit of eaters. Firecracker and purple/chartruese were the hot colors.

I was out for two short hours on Christmas Day morning (8:30-10:30) and did pretty well on Saugers considering the short trip and not having been out on P4 in a while. We got 7 betweeen 16-20″ and 3-4 smaller ones. The bite was generally not aggressive. Darker colors seemed to work best, but we caught them on purple super doos, pro blue ringworms, cotton candy paddletails, and I think one on a chartreuse pepper paddletail. We vertical jigged downriver and dragged back up and caught fish both ways in 12-20′ of water.

My dad, grandpa and I fish tuesday and wendesday. Got to everets at 11 tuesday got our cabin then headed out to the dam. Fished from noon til a little after dark. the 3 of us caught 53 saugers that day all on plastics. Chartruse pepper super doo’s were the ticket. Wendesday we hit the water at sun up and fished until noon. We end the day with 63 saugers from up at the dam. Once again it was the chartruse pepper super doo’s. the orange super doo was good too that day. Good luck if you go and let us know how you did. I did try a little pitching tuesday night with one real small walleye to show for my efforts.

Was out Wed (27th). Haven’t been to the Pool 4 in awhile, lets say over a year , so I was looking to vertical jig and get the rod bent. Fished all day and caught around 20 fish, primarily sauger. Fished up by the Y and chart/pepper Doos on a black precision jig (5/16ths) was the ticket for me. Threw alot of little guys back, but did manage some nice eators for the box . It seemed the bite was consistent from 11:00 to about 1:00 by the Y for me. Found anywhere from 16 to 22 FOW.

Fished down river a bit by Hay Creek during the afternoon, caught a couple walleyes (nothing over 13″), darker colors (watermelon doos) out fished what I was using upstream.

Headed back up to the Y around 3:00. Caught a couple little saugers again on the black precision jig tipped with chart/pepper doo. Did manage a nice 18.5″ Sauger in about 14 feet of water adjacent to the Y (downstream) .

The weather is better now than any MN fishing opener!

Good Luck and I’ll be back.

    Chris
