    Noon Friday 12/8/06

Checked the ramp and river over the lunch break today. There is a TON of sheet ice on the river from downtown to the 494 access. Most of it is moving around right now with the wind and sun working it over.

The ramp has some ice pushed up in there but it would not take long to clear it out. (No boats/trailer in the lot yet today) Most of the sheet ice looks to be about 2 inch thick and goes out from the shoreline about 30 yards in most areas. Some spots look froze over shore to shore. Still think a boat would be able to push through it however. Some of the wing dams may need a wake or two pushed over them to get them fishable.

Looks like a GO for Saturday. Be careful navigating the channel and you should be good to go. See ya on the river!

Thanks for the update.I just stopped down at the lions levee launch and she was froze straight across The olny open water was the very end of the wingdam that sits right in the middle of the island/park. Hope that warm weather softens it up a bit! There was about 2 1/2-3 inches down here along shore and looked to be a good inch + out in the main channel.

    Joe,

Between all the ice and all the boats this afternoon I think you made the right call to go ice fishing…

Lots of ice. With being limited to where a person could fish there was a lot of boats right around the landing working wing dams.
Joe and I got on the water around 2 and spent the 1st 90 minutes driving around breaking ice and seeing what may be possible to fish. We made it as far north as the discharge at pig eye. Broke a lot of ice t get there as it was solid shore to shore 2 to 3″ of ice. There was open water at the discharge but from there to the train bridge and beyond looked to be a lot more of what we had just went threw. From what I saw getting to the airport was just not a option.

So after breaking ice it was back down river to try our luck around 494. This was a challenge also as once the wind died down it didn’t take long for the ice that we had broke up earlier to start working its way down river. Nothing like trying to pitch a wing dam threw chunks of floating ice.

Anyone catch any fish tonight. We caught plenty of ice cubes. At least it was nice out. Looking forward to hitting it again on Sunday.
