I had a guy out for a half day yesterady and had decent luck trolling 3 ways with cranks as well as bait. The wind made it difficult for us to work our jigs, but the size was nice on the 3 ways.
April 3, 2003 at 4:36 pm #262966Trolled ringworms Monday, tuesday,Wed. More than double limits each day. Threw back alot of 3 and 4 pounders. Absolute blast for 3 days!!! 2 Guy’s Mon.and Wed, 3 guy’s on Tues. 20-30 fish an afternoon.
April 3, 2003 at 5:18 pm #262971anybody have a clue on what this cold snap is going to do to the fishing?? it won’t completely shut it down, will it??
I was planning on going today but i had another commitment that i had forgoten about (stupid dentist) . oh well, i’ll be down tommorow instead. it really isn’t the nicest of days anyway. i’m sure it will decrease the amount boat traffic a bit, that’s always good.
April 3, 2003 at 6:17 pm #262988chappy… were you trolling the ringworms up river slow? Ive done real well trolling plastics on the bottom at this time of year… normally grubs… but recently ringworms have done very well….. and sometimes shad bodies…..
as for the weather shutting down the fishing.. nothing totally stops it at this time of year.. slows it.. yeah…. makes it miserable?? FOR SURE!!
April 3, 2003 at 6:37 pm #262990Didn’t slow it yesterday. Made casting for hogs a nightmare but if you wanted to spend 6 hours catching one 18″ – 21″ sauger and walleye after another, you could do that to your hearts content if you could muster the needed boat control in that wind.
The best fishing for numbers of quality fish is NOT up to the dam right now. There’s a few areas kicking out fish and a few guys are on to it, but for the best widespread bite, get your hinder several miles south. As we worked from the head of the lake north yesterday we caught fish, nice fish, every place we stopped. Vertical jigging chart. pepper doos for the monster preggie saugers worked like magic and a some nice male walleyes fell to tequila sunrise ringies…. 16 feet of water seemed to be the right depth for the walleyes on the sand downstream. 21 – 24 feet for the saugers.
I sure wish that wind had been a bit less than relentless yesterday ‘cuz I really had the need to do some pitching after 6 hours of vertical jigging. Even late in the day it was still howling!

April 3, 2003 at 6:45 pm #262992Looked like you and Dustin could both use some spalsh guards, or maybe a bar of soap(lol). We did real well up around the corner when we left.
April 3, 2003 at 7:03 pm #262998I put some guys on to a few spots yesterday after figuring out that they had never fished pool 4 before and told them to stop in after they pulled the boat out and give me a field report. When they came back only 3 hours later I thought I maybe had put them on spots that hadnt quite warmed up yet. Nope! They had done well fishing; it was their gas tank not doing well; it was empty!
In about hour and a half they had caught 6 fish, so the bite hasn’t completely shut down!April 3, 2003 at 7:07 pm #262999Yup! The dumb thing is, we both own a set of White Caps… but neither of us had them installed at the time. Backtrolling with our T-8 kickers made boat control in those waves and staying perfectly vertical a snap, even if the waves came over the back often enough to keep my left shoulder soaked most of the day and the bilge working over-time! I was kinda fun actually, being able to pull off good boat control like that gives me a lot of pride and as a river angler, dealing with waves isn’t something I get to do very often.
We bounced to the bridge, hay creek and then to a couple sand spots just south of everts… fish everywhere. Good to see you on the water Mike.
April 3, 2003 at 7:39 pm #263003yep,and down river. Did’nt really seem to make a difference. You have to havve the right speed though, I started out to slow the other day and caught nothing, sped up alittle,Bang, bang, bang! Right color choice is huge too, If they’re not hitting one ,SWITCH!
April 3, 2003 at 7:57 pm #263007I nromally do not vertical jig that often when I have a shallow bite going, but I had to admit that stickin some of those nice saugers felt good. Its been awhile since I have vertical jigged. I know I had the pleasure of watching ecnook stick plenty of them as well!
My customer did end up with a nice one and thats what made the day even better!April 3, 2003 at 8:09 pm #263010well good ol ECNOOK loaded my pix onto the net… I did more fishing than snapping pix the other day… but yeah… lots and lots of these…….
and even a couple of these fishin ringworms on wingdams…
got a nice eye on that dam too… but I couldnt coax my pard to take a shot of her….
and it was weird up by the dam… there was not many people up there…
but we did good yanking shads up there…. basically there were fish all over and we did pretty good wherever we went…. chartrues was clearly our best color… superdoos were killers…. and the shads were chartruese glitter… they knocked em out too…. ringworms were purple/white and chameleon….. but that was early and shallow…..April 3, 2003 at 9:54 pm #263028You guys are killing me! Its snowing like crazy outside and schools are closed. Lakes are still froze solid. I am coming 22-24 of April. I hope the bite is still on!
April 3, 2003 at 10:50 pm #263036You guys make it extremly hard to concentrate at work when all i can think about is all the fish your catching.
