what’s wrong with this fish?

see pic… there was some kind of growth below its pec fin/behind the gills, and also a little fin rot. Being mostly a bass fisherman I haven’t seen it before, is it common with older/bigger fish? was it possibly due to over handling if it was released previously?

    Guys!

I have posts out telling everyone that this problem exists…. lol Actually, right now, it’s not a top priority with all that’s going on behind the scenes… but we will get it and darn soon. If you need to get a pic on the board, send it to [email protected] and it will go right up.

Here’s the current post to follow regarding the on-going efforts to whip this puppy into shape:

Keep an eye on it as all announcements of improvements and fixes will get tossed there. You guys will really like the improvements with the new attachment system… it’s worth the wait!

Oh there’s always a rush! I hope nobody took my reply as I was getting pissy. I wasn’t… just in case. I actually thought it was kinda funny to have my post about how we’re working on the upload system followed up with posts by guys stating that they “can’t get the upload system to work how do we notify the admin.”

    HELLO!

    LOL

Not sure why I thought that was so funny. But I did. And do. The upload will be working tomorrow so when you get that 14 Lb’er ready to show, we’ll be ready to go.

Oh boy! I can see I’m going to have to be more careful in the future!

Nothing personal guys……………..but I made the offer exclusive to James………….for all he’s going through to see this big ol’ project completed. And, anyone directly working with him on it.

Now, maybe if James doesn’t take me up on it, you could barter a deal for the deal…………………..but it won’t get you the whole efishing network! Nice try though!

I cant think of any disease that would do that… it maybe a result from a foul hook injury that got infected….. possibly the fish was hooked and broke off the lure and it remained there for a while with that result… or it could be a tumor of some sort…. but I tend to think its injury related…. its not unusual to see fish get snagged in that area…..

Hard to tell from the photo but I’ve seen a few tumors like that on eyes before. Dunno what causes em.

I had a fish on one of my pics that i had posted before had like a small hole in his side. IT was very wierd you would think that things could fall out. I mean, through that gap of skin there you could move it around and see more of the fish’s insides, it was rather wierd, we will try to keep him quaranteed on pool 5 so he doesn’t get to pool 4

It’s a little difficult from the picture to really see it clcearly, but if its a sort of growth or tumor, there is a good chance it is a Lymphocystis tumor. Lymphocystis is a disease caused by a virus that causes hypertrophy of the connective tissue cells and shows up as wartlike or tumors-like growths on the body and fins of many fish species- walleye seem to be especially susceptible to this infection. I have seen it much worse than this specimen – where it covers the entire body. I have only observed this in the spring – never during the summer of fall that I can recall. Safe to eat?? really unknown – if you put it back you may catch the same fish again in the summer and the tumor may be gone, then it looks fine….. but will probably still have the virus and the tumor may re-appear next spring after a stressfull winter and pre-spawn. All fish carry lots of bacteria and viruses that never manifest themselves until the fish gets stressed. The nomal process of cleaning and cooking takes care of all of those.
