P4 was just what you guys said was, 3 days of great fishing with limits all days and a few 23-24 inchers to throw back. (Sorry no pics) Started out with a trip to Evert’s where we met Brian K and got the latest low down on what to use and where to go. Pink jig with green hair work very well along with the patriot jig all tipped with a minnow. Had good luck at the dam and where the river on the left comes out. Spent some time at the head of the lake with fair results. Fished Sunday below the high bridge with fish wanting yellow jigs and plastic tipped with a minnow. Hope to get up again and meet with Dean and pick his brain a bit.Tried the method of pitching jigs like the video shows with one walleye to the boat, my fishing partners didn’t seem real interested in stasying at it since they were getting sagged to much. Nonetheless a very great weekend on P4 and thanks for all the info. you guys are willing to share.Rogan

I may have a suggestion for you. If getting snagged was a problem and you werent catching many fish you were most likely using to heavy of a jig. If you use to heavy of a jig the bait with not drift with the current correctly therefore not looking natural to the fish. This may explain your experience. Next time out I would try using some lighter jigs. If you can fell bottom often go lighter until you only hit bottom very seldom or never. Keep at it as it does work.
    My .02, hope this helps.

    By the way nice report.

Just remember rogan, you’ve already met the good looking guy.

When I read your post about pitching…what Mr. Fool said was the first thing that came to my mind too.

The size head will vary depending on water level and currant flow. Knowing what size to use just by looking at the wingie only comes with on the water experiance…that I don’t have.

Once you have a fish SMASH your plastic you’ll be wanting to fish wingies all the time.

I will continue to try this method and go lighter.Down here on P11 I have been giving it a try by myself and cathing some nice largemouth( that I throw back to keep my neigbhor happy) and sheephead, but still tryig to get ol marble eye to bite. One problem I had on P4 was that my fishing buddies weren’t buying into this method seeing how we could catch fish jigging and the that we didn’t see anyone pitching to the wingdams. Why is it that you don’t see more people trying this style? It is more fun than vertical. Can’t wait till I can catch a few more this way. Thanks for the tips, Rogan

Lots of guys pitch shallow down there, but most are vertical jigging for the saugers. I personally like to do both. I’m no expert at pitching, and honestly don’t spend nearly the time I should doing it. I think most will back me when I say pitching may not be a numbers game, but the quality will more than make of for this. This isn’t always the case, but often. It really depends on what you enjoy. I like vertical jigging and schooling the other guys in the boat. Makes for good laughs and ribbing.

Kooty has said it very well…I do not catch huge numbers of fish, but the quality will more than make up for that. This has been my experience. I have been pitching jigs shallow for only about 5 years. I do not claim to be an expert, but I have found I catch good qulity fish by swiming my jig across a wingdam, or pitch to shore and swim it back to the boat. I must have bottom contact, but am not dragging or plowing the bottom. Line watching helps, just tick the bottom on occation and let the current do the rest. If the jig stops on a rock, a slight lift will often get it moving again. Hits are usually pretty significant. I really like night fishing. Less boats, and the fish are really shallow. I can use pretty light jigs. Again, I will not catch 20 a night, but I might get 5 or 6 pretty good fish, sometimes more.

Hey vertical jigging puts fish in the boat, but I like to change it up and cast for fish the best.

    Good Luck!

    Bob.
