Went out this afternoon for a few hours. Pretty much had the place to ourselves only 4 other boats out of new boston 2 commercial. There wasn’t much happening up at the dam so we ran spinners on some rocky stretches at depths from 6-20 ft. The only thing we caught was a drum when we pitched a jig with a 3” power minnow in a shallow area.

Jeff, was on pool 12 yesterday, boated three nice eyes and one sauger. still a slow up there to.
October 22, 2006 at 9:56 pm #491410Hey Jeff,
I launched out of Keithsburg early and managed 6 saugers and 3 eyes (all released) just north of the Iowa river. Did manage 2 saugers early just below the 2nd or 3rd wing dam from the lock. I have been having pretty good luck the past couple of weeks vertical jigging that whole stretch.
Give me a holler if you want to get out sometime I fish until ice up and usually have an open seat. Just moved to the area a couple of years ago and have only met bass fishermen that don’t like the cold.
VikeFanPosts: 525October 22, 2006 at 11:55 pm #491428Even before the crappy weather played out this weekend, I had decided to wait before hauling my boat to Bellevue, the Quad Cities, or New Boston. Sounds like I made the right decision.
The forecast is for more cold, unstable weather with precip. this week, but if we get a decent day–sun, not too much wind–next Saturday or Sunday, I am going to do some vertical jigging somewhere below a lock and dam in Iowa. My experience has been that the bite doesn’t really turn on until about Halloween on the Mississippi in Iowa.
October 23, 2006 at 12:20 am #491438Fished 10-20 in the afternoon on pool 18, no walleyes. Fished 10-22 on pool 16, 15 to 20 saugers, no size.
October 23, 2006 at 2:15 am #491475We have probably seen each other out there fishing. Noticed we live in the same town. Hope to learn more here about river fishing walleyes.
VikeFanPosts: 525October 28, 2006 at 11:03 pm #493316Too windy for my taste today, and probably too much stuff to do tomorrow. I am clearing time right now for a trip to the Big Muddy next weekend.
October 28, 2006 at 11:48 pm #493320Not going to be able to get out this weekend. Getting things around the house ready for winter. How would I recognize you on the river Esox60. I pull my boat with a rusty white van. My boat is a 16′ lowe jon with a newer merc 4-stroke. You will ussually see me trolling while everyone else is catfishing.
Good Fishing Jeff
October 29, 2006 at 12:32 am #493333I have an Alumacraft 195 with a 150 Yamaha and a 15 mercury. Will be out tomorrow but not sure where yet.
November 1, 2006 at 12:07 am #494406I havn’t fished New Boston in years is ramp still gravel? Fish mainly pool’s 16&17.
November 1, 2006 at 12:53 am #494434They put in 2 new ramps several years ago. Both concrete. However they are doing some construction there and hopefully only 1 of the newer ramps will be closed at a time. Water is too low for me to use the old ramps.
November 2, 2006 at 12:15 am #494925esox60 thank you for the info maybe i’ll see you on the water sometime i’m running a ranger 1850 175opti 8 hp kicker
November 4, 2006 at 9:55 pm #495988Began my annual month of vacation today and fished from 10:00AM until 3:00PM. Cought several really big white bass, several cigar sized Sauger, two really nice Sauger and two really nice (within the slot) Walleyes.
Only fished in the ‘dishpan’ (as I call it). And, only used one presentation (the ol’3 way with a minnow). Was just so nice being out there… little competition, friendly fish, and most important, was not at work!
November 5, 2006 at 1:01 am #496008Been hearing some good things about this pool. And with constructic leading the way, yer gonna have some luck. He definately got the horseshoe going this fall season.
November 6, 2006 at 2:41 am #496265Neil where is the dishpan. I haven’t heard of that one yet.
Isn’t fall on the river great? It is so peaceful out there.

JeffNovember 8, 2006 at 11:29 pm #497565For the last 5 days two commerical fishermen have pretty much strung nets from bank to bank within the first downstream mile of the dam. Gill nets & hoop nets. This can’t be good for for either the fish migration or the sportfishermen. One of their trucks has Arkansas license plates… something truly fishing going on. They aren’t checking their nets often, and, when they do, they won’t pull them up if any one is near enough to see.
November 9, 2006 at 12:25 am #497595Didn’t have much time but I did get out from 4:00 pm till 5:15 pm tonight. Water temp 47 degrees. Fished 1/2 oz jigs with 3″ grubs and minnows. No fish. Did see the nets. Floats were strung out everywhere, from 1 bank to the other. Watch out when going up. How close to the dam can they legally set nets?

Not sure about commercial regs but am sure going to look into it. You are right about being careful. I wouldn’t want to run up there after dark. All the floats up there are for the hoop nets – gill nets aren’t marked.
November 9, 2006 at 7:39 pm #497933Got this in an email today. Maybe something’s going to be done about the commercial nets choking off the dam.
“Neil….: I took the liberty of forwarding your email to Tom Cox of the FWS and Bill Ohde ,IDNR, last night so they were aware of the commercial operations going on down there. Cox called me in the duck blind early this morning and told me they were aware of the situation and they were in the
process of figuring out what action to take as of yet. He told me thanks for the heads up but stressed to me NOT to personally confront those guys what so ever because one of them is a very very bad actor and someone to definitely stay clear of and not confront for sure. They know who they are , but don’t know what they are up too yet from what he said.”November 9, 2006 at 11:50 pm #498024Went up one morning early and I mistook the floats for pelicans until I got almost on them. Anybody know if these guys are putting in on the Iowa or Illinois side? You guys that are going out tomorrow, good luck.
November 10, 2006 at 12:01 am #498029I was at New Boston today fish good catching BAD WATER TEMP at 8:00am 49 3:30pm 52

They’re putting in at Toolesboro – Iowa side. But, usually, their tow vehicle is moved from the parking lot (out of sight someplace).
There is simply no way that gill nets spanning 2/3rds the width of the channel is not going to hurt the fishing, and worse, next years spawn. Even legal sized openings on gill nets will stop (and kill) those 6+ pound Walleyes. Where are the treehugging PETA people when ya need’em.
November 15, 2006 at 2:15 am #499593Nets were still there saturday and sunday. As far as the fishing went for me, saturday was slow and sunday was a little better. Water temp was 47 sunday if I remember correctly.
