8/26 It was a beautiful morning to get out on the water and try to find some eye action. “The Other Putz” and I hit lower P3. Water temp was around 79 degress, light wind, nice cool morning. We dropped the boat in at Treasure Island and started making our way up the river. It has been really slow for me the last month, so I didn’t have high expectations for the day, besides the normal competition/bantering that seems to take place between the two of us.
First spot we pitched was a rock shore line, caught many fish in this spot, just all bass .
We continued making our way up river piching wingdamns with the same results, bass after bass. These things were hitting every hard bait we threw at them. Nothing of any size, just a lot of them.
We checked out Buffalo, there were a few boats in there, saw one guy boat a little shark, he was live bait rigging, the rest of us were trolling, so after a few runs we headed up to Mileys. Nothing happening in there for us, but the flow is more noticeable with the recent rains, might be a good spot for another fish specie with the tree jams in there. More on that later.
Then we found a wingie that was cooperating, we managed to boat 2 eyes and a sauger off of this spot. Well actually Putz boated them, I was Johnny on the spot with the net.
One of the eyes and the sauger were nice 18″ fish, the 3rd was this 26 3/4 beauty.
Our game plan for the day was to pitch cranks, no live bait in the boat. These fish hit a #7 black/gold, a #7 craw, and a rattle trap, I don’t remember the color. Together we threw just about every hard bait we had, from Bombers, to Raps, to jointed raps, walleye divers to rattle traps.
I was pleasently surprised to see the lowering water temp and some flow again. All in all, it was a good day. We were on the water from sun up until about 1. Putz caught all the fish that counted. I was left holding an empty bag. It happens I guess, I out fished him last weekend in his boat in Wabasha.
See you on the river.
