Ya, we were trolling Saturday over by just above Pepin where a couple weeks ago we had some big sauger action. The sauger and walleye were a no show, but there were some big white bass to be had. Just watch the gulls! Anyway, we were on our first white bass encounter and I decided to put a better white bass crankbait on my other pole, so I let my 6 1/2 foot medium St Croix Avid sit with a 1/4 oz white jig (Hutch’s) sit over the side of the boat as a dead rod for a minute while I switched baits on my baitcaster. Well, I hear some clatter and see a flash of my rod going over and hear that sickening “sploosh” sound! Grrrrr! We tried to snag it but to no avail. So much for that $200+ dollar rig! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

We did have a ball with the white bass. We probably caught 35-40. Nice big ones with shoulders! My best lure was a size 7 jointed Shad Rap in the natural Shad color.

Sorry to hear about your rod, MIA.
It just might turn up after that White Bass stops dragging it all over the place.
Were any of those fish above 18 or 19 inches???
    any pics???
have any pics of the past bigger Saugers????
    throw them on here…

That does suck to lose the rod, but look on the bright side, you caught 40 big strippers!

Orv, same thing happened to me up by the dam except it was a Legend.
Ouch. That was a couple of years ago. It gets better with time.

Steve, I feel a little better knowing I’m in good company! I’ve got a 6-4 Leg Tournament and another Avid 6-8MXF to keep me going. Geez, I was just looking at all of my rods the other day and thinking I need to downsize, but I didn’t want to start this way! I have too many baitcasters and I could have absorbed a losing one of those much better.

I feel your pain. Resist the urge to downsize. It just leads to buying more rods.
I’ve sold three rods this year to buddies that didn’t want to invest in new equipment. That’s kind of a good deal. You’re helping your buddies get into fishing and putting a couple of $$ in your pocket. You can sell 3 so-so rods and get yourself a new higher end rod.
The rod I dropped was also a spinning rig. It would have lessened the pain if it was a caster for sure.

You’re not alone! My Avid is at the bottom of pool 15 just below the dam. Carp fishing believe it or not. Had one rod in a holder and the other I had just leaned against the side of the boat. Looked over, watched it twitch, went to grab it, and pow it launched five feet off the side of the boat and kept going. The bad part was it was my first stcroix ever. That and it was a carp that got her..
