    Hey all,

Where’s everybody been?! I’m seeing very few, if any, boats on the water lately. Yeah, its hot, but the fishing’s been GREAT!

Ok, so granted, the heat this past week nearly did me in on several occassions but the walleye just kept on biting! We’re still seeing numbers of nice 18″ – 21″ fish plus a handful of 25″ – 27″ fish coming to net as well. We’ve defintiely been blessed lately with the opportunity to CPR some real dandies when the general consencus has been that the fish just shouldn’t be biting during such an intense heat wave!

Little has changed in regards to location and technique. Rigging bait in 9′-12′ of water, slightly deeper than past reports, has been the top producing method. Leeches have been putting almost all the bigger fish in the boat while crawlers have been responsible for the pure numbers of fish boated. Rigging a plain hook and bait or floating jighead will produce fish. Color hasn’t been too terribly important. Oddly enough, early mornings were responsible this week for the majority of the “eaters” while the intense mid-day heat seemed to kick the big fish into feeding mode as we typically saw our best fish come to net from 11 AM -1 PM. I have not been on the water fishing walleye since the weather cooled markedly, I had a couple bass trips late this week, so I can’t comment (YET… but soon) on the effects the cooler weather has had on the walleye action. Look for an update from both Dustin and I after the weekend.

    Good fishin’,

James, Where have you been fishing ? Are the Bay City flats a good starting place for that kind of presentation?Or would Cranks be the better option in this area?

    Hey Chappy,

I’ve been all over in the river north of Pepin. I have NOT been fishing Bay City Flats but there’s been a bunch of boats working that area most days…. something is usually biting there but it wouldn’t be a spot high on my list right now with the flows so low and falling daily. That spot does kick out a ton of nice fish when the conditions are right though. I’ve been sticking more to the main channel and fairing better. Sure, there’s always some fish to catch off the main channel with these conditions but I’ve done better fighting it out with all the crazy pleasure boaters!

I’ve been doing better rigging or jigging than I have pulling plugs. I spent a good chunk of the day crankin’ this AM and caught short fish….. nothing of size.

Hope this helps ya’ out some…

    Erick,

With the water levels as low as they are right now I have been using 1/16oz and1/8 oz jigs color has not played that big of a role for me but it never hurts to expierement a little.

Good luck on your next outing!

Hey all! Been some of us fishing even during the heat! And yes the fishing continues to be excellent even for those

of us who have no real expertise and rely on dumb luck. Our best luck has been live bait (primarily crawlers with a

few leeches) on small jigs (mostly dragging – don’t seem to be finding a particular hot color right now – key seems

to be nice lively bait) Take the kids – they have a ball!

We fish for anything (do prefer walleyes though)
