30.5 inch walleye caught

After hearing Mark Stanley catching nice fish last year with James Holst I decided to go with him on a guided trip.

We went out and while it was really slow all day at the end of the day 45 minutes before quiting all the luck came banging right in.

I was casting a Rapala Rattling Fat Rap in Clown pattern (now discontinued) towards rocks. I had already got hung up a few time from underwater rocks. Another cast and I thought, great hung up again. I opened my bail (since these floated) and gave it a few seconds and reeled down again. It didn’t move … or did it? Then I felt this slow head shake. I set the hook real hard and started pulling. I had 14 lb braided line on (the black stuff – spiderwire? whatever James Holst had spooled up). I started reeling on him. And when this fish wanted to turn, turn she did. She would put her head down and zing would go the line. Shake, shake, shake. Finally I had the line boat side but she was still deep. I kept the tip high and let her bow the rod to absorb the charges until she was netted. After landing her we took these pictures and measured her (giving her a few breathers in the livewell). We then went back to the launch and James got a digital scale. Came in at 10 lbs 14 ozs. After one more final picture, he took her back to where we got her from.

Awesome Fish. Here’s a few of the pics.

I have them uploaded to my Flickr account

I didn’t notice it the first time I looked, but does that fish have some sores on its side? It may be just a reflection, but she looks a little beat up.

    Great CPR

Yep, you hardly EVER hear of James, Dustin, or Tuck putting a client on a piggie. NEVER happens.

Truth is that it happens all the time as long as I’m not within 100 miles.

Way to go guys. Thanks for sharing!

Here’s one of the pics I have of this beauty! An early summer walleye pushing 11 Lb’s is a RARE catch indeed.

As a way for Carl to remember his catch we took 30 seconds and shot a little video. I think a couple photos and 30 seconds of video is a fabulous alternative to a mount. Carl must have had his mind made up about releasing this fish before it hit the bottom of the net because he didn’t hesitate for a second when it came time to release her.

    Awesome job, Carl!

it was an awesome fish. Video definitely makes it memorable. Never a doubt in my mind about releasing her. If I ever put something on the wall it would be a replica. She sure gave the smaller walleys we had in the livewell a thrashing.

Any idea on the girth? My fishing partner out by himself, had a 31 1/4″ last Thursday night with an 18 3/4″ girth. Getting a replica of it. Taxidermist said it should have weighed around 12-13 lbs.

In our Wednesday night tourney since the second week in May there have been 3 over 9 lbs registered as big fish and the biggest one weighed in at 10.3 lbs and was 28 3/4″ long. This past Wednesday night you needed a 7lb fish to take 3rd place. 9lb 2oz lbs 1st place, 8lbs 11oz took 2nd. Pretty much need a 7+ lb fish to get into the Money.

Either the fishery on Pool 8 and 9 is getting that much better or us fishermen are getting that much better. Ever year they just keep getting bigger.

Nice Fish Though! I love pics of big walleye!

i noticed that afterwards too. i think she thrashed in the livewell and bent her fin. no intentional marking to the tail was done. She should be fine.

    Carl,

Welcome to IDA. Great story and awesome fish and release. Should provide you some good spots for river fishing. Careful, you moving to Zumbro Falls and being closer to the river is going to turn you into a walleye guy.
