Went on Lake Pepin yesterday and kept 4 nice saugers and 3 walleyes. We caught several more, but they were less then 15” long. We had to fish all over for them yesterday. We caught some here and there, because they weren’t really schooled up in one area. We fished Hak-si-lo Campground Point and caught nothing. Fished Central Point and caught two. Fished the break next to the Hok-si-la (near the rocks) and caught nothing. Fished the drop between Hanson’s Harbor down to Long Point and caught a few more, right in front of the last white house heading north in 13 FOW. Tried the rocky point (with a white cross on it) near the Old Frontnac (boat landing) and caught nothing. Tried Maiden Rock Flats and caught two sheepies. Some other boats caught some small saugers and walleyes trolling here. Tried the rocky shore from Maiden Rock Flats (Wisconsin side) south down to and across from Long Point and caught nothing.

Headed to Rocky Point and here is where we loaded up on them. Every time I fish this area, I always catch a few here. We used the Min-Kota to maneuver back and forth (parallel) across the break line, fishing between 7-15 FOW. I caught a 5 lbs catfish at this location as well. We maneuvered down to the three piers that protect the Lake City Harbor. Here there are two raised spots or humps (the water is normally about 23 feet deep, but it raises up to 18 feet). I caught a nice walleye right on the southern hump. There was another boat fishing this spot (the two sunken islands) by trolling and they caught a lot of saugers and walleyes, but they were on the small side averaging about 13”-15”. After this, we finished the day off by following the break line down to the Rochsen landing and caught nothing.

It was a really windy day, but the fishing was still great. Most of the saugers were caught in about 15 FOW, while the walleyes were caught in about 5-10 FOW. The fish preferred either minnows or big leeches on a green jig head with a 3” chartreuse tail, a chartreuse colored hook with about a 3 foot snell, or just a plan orange jig head.

I heard that there is some kind of a tourney this weekend on Lake Pepin. Good luck to all who are fishing it and to all who are just going fishing for fun. I read that there is a tournament in early July with a $1,500 in prize winnings for first place on pool 4 as well. Is anyone fishing this or thinking about it? I might give it a try.

I also have a question for you guys. Do you know of any spots in the pool 4 area that holds northern pike, large mouth, or small mouth bass? I would like to go fishing for them just for a change of pace and to try something different. All I know of is fishing the feeder creeks that dump into the lake, such as Rush River with a sucker minnow. If you give my any info, I’ll share any info that you would like.

The rocks along the MN shoreline from Maple Springs to Camp Lacupolis are fantastic for bass. Small cranks and tube jigs mid-day. Topwater is always worth a try early and late in the day.
