A friend and I headed down to Lake Pepin. We were on the water by 6am and started out at Hok-Si-La Point. The water was flat as glass and had dropped two feet since last Thursday. I caught one sauger on a pink hook tipped with a minnow. No more bites so we headed south to Central Point.
We started on the north side of the point. My friend didn’t waist anytime. As soon as she dropped her line in, she brought in a nice 22 inch walleye. She caught this on a green jig head with a three inch chartreuse ring worm, tipped with a minnow. Bang, bang, bang, she caught several more. I only caught one. By this time I decided to change to what she was using (the green jig setup). As soon as I changed to the jig, I started catching them too! We used the Min-Kota trolling motor to maneuver back and forth on the south side of this point. The walleyes where lying in 9 feet of water on the south side of this point. We caught a few more to add to the live well. Another boat on the north side of the point was catching a few too. After about one and a half hours, the fish seemed to have moved out of the area. We moved too.
We fished the south side of the rocky City Point. We used the Min-Kota again because there was no wind what so ever. I caught a nice walleye right at the entrance of the Lake City Marina in front of the gas sign in 15 feet of water. We turned around again and we caught several more. Man, the walleyes were tearing up these green jigs. This made me feel as we were up north on Cass Lake or Leech Lake. What a blast!
We moved back and forth a few more times and caught some more, still adding to the live well. I decided to use the Min-Kota and maneuver around the rocks and moved south along the three piers and to the main pier which blocks the harbor. There were three guys fishing at the end of the pier on the side where the boats go in and out of the lake. They were casting jigs tipped with a minnow across to the rocky point that protects the harbor (with the three piers on it). Almost every cast these guys where pulling in nice sized walleyes. They were there about an hour and limited out, then they headed home. It doesn’t get any better than this. These guys had million dollar smiles on their faces. This is a great place to shore fish. I have even limited out while fishing off of the pier.
We continued to move parallel with the rocky pier and down to Rochsen. There was a ton of boats fishing the drop off. But, I was surprised to see no one catching any fish. After a half an hour we moved again.
We tried Long Point. We fished the drop off heading north to the point. There were a lot of boats here too. As soon as I dropped my line in the water, I caught a nice sauger. A few minutes later I caught one more. Well that’s it. We limited out by 1:30pm. It started to get really hot and decided to head home. We didn’t catch a single sheepie.
Moral of the story, green jigs with a three inch chartreuse ring worm, tipped with minnow worked awesome. It caught 95 percent of our fish. The other 2.5 percent came on a pink hook tipped with a minnow. And the other 2.5 percent came on a fire tiger colored Phelps Floater tipped with a minnow. The walleyes hung around 9 feet of water, while the saugers hung out in about 15 feet of water. We tried leeches and crawlers, but the fish didn’t want them. We almost used 3 scoops of minnows. Good luck to everyone who goes out this weekend!
