Darrell Klevan and I were out enjoying an absolutely beautiful, warm, no wind, no crowds, and no pleasure boats day on Wed 3/26. We went to the same pool 4 place where we had good luck the week before (way downstream from the dam). Last week there was little water flow and the bite was very light – we did best with tiny jigs and minnows.
Yesterday the flow was much faster and we did best with ¼ oz jigs and plastics. Needless to say the bite was much improved with the faster flow. Because the jigs were moving by so fast in relation to the fish, they had to make a very quick decision if they were going to hit the jig – when some of them hit, they almost took the rod out of your hand. At times you could not even see the jig and plastic as it was totally in the fishes mouth. We caught a fish about every 10-15 minutes and most of them were about 15-17” saugers, although we did get a few walleyes.
The female saugers are currently mixed right in with the males. If the fish looks really fat it is probably a female full of spawn and should be released. Attached is a picture of Darrell with a 20” very fat female (although the picture does not show a good view of how fat it really was) – that was our big fish for the day. We were having so much fun that we did not even try to go after the big ones. Life does not get much better than this!
