A friend and I decided to see how the bite was on Lake Pepin today. We checked out our normal hot spots and all that we produced was one small perch. We had a few other bites, but the fish just wouldn’t hang on to it. We tried jigging with minnows and also dragging minnows as well.
There were several boats out there today, and I didn’t see anyone else catching anything either. Most people were using minnows as well, but some were trolling shad raps.
The second half of the day we headed up to Red Wing. The parking lot was full of trucks and trailers. I was surprised to see so many boats on the river today, especially since it was a weekday. This just goes to show you that anglers have their priorities set right – fishing comes before work.
I had one heck of a whack on my pole and I began to real it in. All I could feel was solid weight and one nasty fighting fish. Unfortunately the fish snipped off my line before it surfaced. I was surprised to see that a fish could snip off fireline. I can only imagine that it was a very big northern based on the way it felt. Oh well, some things just aren’t meant to happen. If anyone catches a big northern with a pink colored hook in its mouth please let me know. I’m curious to see how big it really was. I did end up catching one decent sized sauger. My friend cursed our boat the rest of the day by catching a dreaded sheephead . Better luck next time.
The water level is still above its normal stage, but the water is cleaning up. There are a few stumps and tree branches in the water, so be on the look out. All in all it was a beautiful day to be on the water, even if we didn’t catch many fish.
