I have the opportunity to buy a 2003 Smokercraft Millentia 171, rebuilt 90HP Evinrude (year 1992) by a great mechanic who will back it, with batteries, 50PD/AP, and bunk trailer for $13,500. This price includes tax.
Could you please tell me if this is a good/fair deal.
I am not real familiar with the Smokercraft line, history, or customer satisfaction. I looked at the website and it looks quite similar to a Mr. Pike or an Alumacraft Magnum. Once again, if you have some advice, could you post it soon or PM me. Thanks to all and hopefully will see some of you on Pool 4 this summer.

I have been shopping for a new boat and have priced this boat with a new 90hp merc for a little over 15,000, without a trolling motor. so for about 2,000 more you could have all new and piece of mind.

Brand for brand, package for package………..I’d have to side with the “pass” vote. It may be within a quoted value range, but it’s certainly not a “too good to pass up” offer. There’s better available and better will come along. If you have the ability to make a purchase of that expenditure, I’d search for a new deal.

I’ll give you all the lowdown. The dealer/mechanic is my wife’s uncle. He has a very good reputation as a mechanic. I know the motor will be “warrantied”. A local dealer told me that this mechanic is one of a few that he would trust. ( and that is coming from the mouth of a person trying to sell me a boat!) I have priced the boat with the extras and a bunk trailer at all the dealers in the area with a new motor and the difference is about $4000. I plan on keeping this boat for a long time and, quite honestly, I would rather have nicer boat than a new motor, dealing with my limited budget. This is a huge upgrade from my original boat that I was looking for. I am pretty sure this is going to be the one for me. One more night’s sleep and the order is going in. Thanks for all of your thoughts and input on this HUGE purchase. All in all, this is the boat for me.

    good luck

a boat is only worth what somebody else is willing to pay for it. if the motor is only worth 3 grand, the boat, trailer and equipment are running you around 10.5?

    that’s pretty steep imho.

you really must LOVE that boat.

The Latest: I decided to go with a new motor, 90HP. A promotion just started with a package with a Smokercraft and a Johnson. The difference is only $1500. Now we are all set. Including tax, cover, and trolling motor plate, we still came in $1500 less than the price of local dealers w/o trolling motor, cover, plate, and tax. Now I feel really good with the decision. I truly appreciate all of your honest opinions and experience that helped me make the right decision. Thanks to all and have fun on the water.

You won’t be sorry. I have a 2001 Johnson 90 hp motor. It is alittle cold blooded but it runs great, has alot of power, and even trolls real nice without any spit and sputter. Love the motor. Thanks, Bill

Howdi mustbefishing, I think you made a good decision to go new. Now when you get out on some of those local wates keep us posted on how thigs are going over on FTL. We could use some up to date info on Altoona,Eau Claire,Otter,Wissota. If you ever have an empty seat give me a shout and I’ll gladly get some photo’s of your new rig and all those big fish. Steve
