Fished Lake Erie, last week for 4 days, 3 people, launched from the Turtle Creek marina, $10 a day launch fee, good for the date of issue. Stayed at Mar-Lu resort in MarbleHead, Oh., about a 20 mile drive each day, one way. First day there went to Lorain, Oh., about 20 miles east of Marblehead, and cast plugs, top water, from the breakwall in Lorain. This is evening fishing, in 4-12 foot of water, looking for walleyes up close to the rockline that protects the harbor, and beach areas. The week we were there it was a bit early in the season, and water temps there were a bit cooler than desired. We did however manage a nice 6 1/2 lb. walleye out of the evening, about 2 1/2 hours, and left the area. The warmer weather the rest of the week, should have made this week and next the prime time to do this type of night walleye fishing. There is a bait store in Vermilion, Oh., Dave’s bait and tackle, that is also his web site address, that does daily updates on the local fishing conditions in the Vermilion, and Lorain area. The rest of the week was spent on the water, fishing out of the Turtle Creek area, and targeting the reefs, in the A thru F marker can area. The water temps ranged from 45 degrees, on Tuesday, to 51.6 degrees on Thursday. The walleyes appeared to be in full spawn this week. Purple hair jigs, 5/8 oz, with stinger hook, and emerald shiners accounted for the nearly 80 + fish caught these 3 days. All but 1 walleye caught these 3 days were male fish, and ranged in length from 17-24 inches. Kept one days limit for the trip home. The weather could not have been better, 10-15 mph. from the shore allowed for the perfect chop on the water at the reefs. Depths fished were from 9-15 feet with the larger fish coming from the deeper water, and at the back of each reef, not the windward side. The smaller walleye seemed to be at the front of the reefs, and on the tops of the reef. It was the best 4 days out of the past 4 years of going to Erie that I have experienced.
