I’m just wondering if anyone uses, or has any luck with, 5″ Kalin’s this time of year. Can they be as productive in spring as they are in fall, pitched shallow? I plan on giving them a try Friday. I would think most of the bait fish available are quite sizeable until well after spawn, and these large baits should “match the hatch”. I have a good supply of ringies and doo’s if the Kalin’s don’t pan out though!

Steve Vick and I have snuck out for a couple hours the last couple afternoons and we’ve been knockin’ the heck out of nice sized fish… all on the 5″ K-grubs. Firecracker, black-n-silver have been the best. Just pitch up on a flat and drag-crawl it off the edge. We are catching fewer fish than we would probably catch using smaller baits but the average size is just dandy. Lots of 20″+ walleyes. We had 15 walleyes in two hours yesterday doing this. Use them during prime feeding times when the fish are more likely to be agressively feeding and they work great.

I gave the Kalins a try Friday without much success, but we did not get out till midday, and did not find any fish shallow with any presentation. I will definetly continue working them when conditions are more favorable for a shallow bite. Also fished the tailwater with ringies, do’s and other plastics. The small fish were hitting, and I hooked a HUGE fish with a ringie, but could not get the fish off of the bottom in several minutes, then applied too much pressure and lost it. I believe it must have been a big flathead or sturgeon. It headed for the channel and there was nothing I could do to stop it with 6#test.

Corps adjusted rollers in the morning and really messed up the tailwater pattern that had been producing well for the guys I talked to. My best producer was a chartruese/pepper super do, tight to the bottom.
