I’m assuming spring break is the third week of March???? If so, you shouldn’t have to worry about flooding yet. Although this warmup this week will cause a little runoff. JIg size depends on how deep you’re fishing, but basically start with 3/8 if you’re below the dam and go heavier or lighter if needed. That is a good weight to start with. Your best bet for baits would be a lead head jig with a superdoo. If you’re doing any casting, I would recommend plastic twister tails. K-Grubs, RIngworms, Berkly power baits. Plastics have definitely been catching larger fish up here at the Red Wing dam the last week or so compared to minnows. MInnows aren’t all bad. They have their time and place, but lately, artificial has been the way to go. Good Luck. Let us know how you do.

Berkley grubs are fine. As far as colors, this past week I caught fish on bright chartreuse to black to green to purple to blue to brown…..you get the picture. I would guess that in a couple weeks, you’re gonna want to switch over to the brighter colors as the water gets a little more dirty. Although, you would be surprised how well dark colors do in murky waters. That’s the great thing about ringworms and K-grubs (in my opinion)…..they have an oversized tail that really “thumps” in the current. The fish can hone in on that sound and locate the bait better. That’s just my opinion…I would like to think that is right! The new ringworms that just came out from B fish N Tackle have a bigger tail than the old ones. They’re about twice as big as the old ones. I don’t personally know much about the whitman dam, but i’m sure somebody here will jump in on the where and what details. Gook Luck.

The Whitman Dam will be at Bass Camp. I haven’t been there for years but good places to fish were along the lock wall with sonars jigging, Across the river there is a rock pile that you can fish. Across from the landing, below the rock pile there are a bunch a wingdams to troll bottom bouncers and floaters or 3-ways and floaters will work on wingdams and also the areas between them too. You can also driff down river jigging the edges of the wingdams too. If you head down river from the Dam on the left side you will see an opening to a lake or backwater area. There was a closing dam there going across the entry way that you can cast jigs too. If you go down river farther you will come to a town on your ledt side. I believe that there are wingdams across from the town that use to hold fish too. Make sure you get a map of the pool as it will help. Good luck and give us a report when you are done fishing. Thanks, Bill

    Ryan,
This area is real good for numbers of fish. Fishing on the Wi side near the dam and by the gut will produce good size fish. May need to bring jigs from 1/4 to 3/8 size with different colors tipped with live bait or plastics. If you head over to the MN side you can fish at the end of the wall you’ll see where the slack water meets with the current try there. While on the MN side drift down the rocky shore line try dragging your jigs if fish are not active. Just below the bouy marker is a wing dam stay out a little way and work in towards the wing dam this one is a little fast and comes up quick. Down stream on both sides are series of wing dams. Down stream about 2 miles on the WI side is Keseal Horse there is a closing dams and if water is low you may not be able to get in their. But rember that walleyes mat be in shallower than saugers but this is a good area to fish. And if you need another area Winona dam just a little ways down holds good numbers of fish as well.
    Good luck

You can purchase those plastice at most of the Gander Mountain stores now. They also have them in the online store here on FTR. I carry them here and some of the local bait shops around here carry them. I’m not sure of any smaller bait shops that have them downriver from here. (Red Wing area that is). Good Luck.
