I just read an article in the North American Fisherman about the Rapala swimming jigs. They say that they are supposed to work great all year long, and on whatever type of water you are on. So have any of you guys used them on the river, and have you had any success with them???

The jigging raps really rock through the ice. I’m gonna try them out for summer fishing this year. You want to attach a minnow tail to the treble hook – some folks use the heads too – I don’t like them as much. Then you need to drop the jig to the bottom and pick it up about 6 inches. The key is to pause for 10/30 seconds at that point them pick it up 2-3 times about 2 feet max. Then drop it back to the pause spot. Wait the 10/30 seconds again and then jiggle your rod tip and pause your 10/30. Then drop to the bottom and back to the pause spot for another 10/30. When they hit you’ll know it – they are a blast to fish. You can use either size 5,7,9 JR’s or size 2/3 nils master jiggers or the jr size jigger shad. They all work. You can also put a whole minnow on the treble if you like – hang on tight and have fun. Chuckles

I tried them last time I was out on pool 4… had a vexilar right where I was jigging so I could see the rap.. and the fish looking at it…. I did NOT tip it… maybe it would have mattered… I had lots of looks but not one bump……
down on pool 10 I hear they were using them through the ice on the river with good success….

I’ve used them through the ice for the past couple of years and they work great. I just think they might get snagged a lot on the river, and at 3-5 dollars a pop I don’t know if I want to really try that hard if all I’m going to do is lose hooks!!

YUP YUP YUP Saved my but Ice Guiding this year. Hair , jigging spoons and plastic just weren’t as effective through the ice. All of the above are already shining on open water though. I plan to test them throughout the year.
You better hurry to Gander before I get there!!!!!, actually I bought a bunch when they first went on sale. We had to spend more like 10 minutes on the pause part of the presentation and if you turned the heat down everybody got a little bit of shiver going on and that was enough for the eyes down here. LOL Just like Chuckles mentioned I pick them up every once in a while to get all the “critters” attention again.
