Pool 2 MONSTER!

went out with one of the nicest guys on Pool 2, MikeW. We headed out in search of the pre-spawn females targeting sand flats, current breaks, and rip rap. In true IDA fashion we were pitching plastics in 1/16oz jigs with purple, and oyster ring worms.

We took a couple of nice fish early on a new spot we found that was as “fishy” as you’ll find on Pool 2. One came pitching, one came dragging.

Later we moved up to another favorite spot and decided to vertical jig for the sundown bite which proved to be fruitful. I would like to shatter the myth that big pre-spawn females (the trophies we’re after) aren’t taken vertical jigging. The following sow disguised as a walleye was taken in 15ft over a sand flat directly beneath me. She hit it hovering about 1 ft off the bottom. And there is something about setting the hook on big fish with fireline (no stretch) right below the boat.

A big thanks to MikeW for letting me tag along and catch his “wallhanger”. Mike, next time I’ll net your piggie and make sure to get her on the first time!!!! Thanks again.

What a great fish, size? Did it hit the 30″ range and the 10# mark??
Vertical jigging with Fireline is awesome, drag a little lose to make up for the zero stretch.I love that “zing” sound when you set the hook on fish with Fireline.
    Great fish!!!

I was about 50 feet away when they netted that pig. It was kind of a funny sight . I believe it was right around 28″, but a Fatty and a Half. My guess was in the 9-10 lb range. Not to many 28″ fish truly make 9 much less 10 lbs. That ol girl was a good nine and could have been nearing the 10 lb mark

dimensions on her were a little shorter than i thought at first glance but she was a tank
    28′ on the nuts
didn’t have the digital but conservatively i would say 9lbs but probably close to 10lbs.
Mike caught the fattest 21 incher i’ve seen in a while, maybe he can chime in here and post it (if he’s not on the river as we speak.)

WOW!!! Now thats what I call a walleye. Man is that ever a nice fish. I think you should frame that pic of you holding that fish as it will bring back memories that will last a lifetime. Plus your kids and grandkids someday will see that pic and ask to to tell them how you caught it and you will relive that day for many years. Way to go. Its a beauty.
    Thanks, Bill

Forget luck Chris. We found that one tucked back in the corner of the live well. You must of left it in there.

Yea good call Bob. I don’t know why I was so pumped…I mean I catch fish like that everyday. Actually I think it was recalling that freakish photoshopped picture Alvin has as his avatar and I just lost it.
