Just got back from Red Wing. I had a blast down at Everts. Sat morning it was -1 when we arrived and 4 above when we got the boat in The fog was extremely thick and using the shoreline for structure reference was impossible. The fog didnt lift until about 9am. We caught 15-20 eater fish yesterday in the deep water up near the lock but only one fish that we could weigh in the tourney. Most fish we caught were on BFT hair jigs or BFT Firecracker ringworms

This morning was about the same temp. I fished with Brooktrout and he was a great partner. We brought only two fish to the scales but we covered alot of water and I got to learn a few spots. Jason pretty much gave me the Pool 4 101 and some tips that were great. This weekend was a great learning experince. I got to chat with Dean, Steve Vick, Dustin, Jon J, Jason and my Sat partner Corey. Even though I didnt win any money, I walked away with some priceless tips on river fishing. Heres a few pics from the weekend.

I want to say thanks to BrookTrout for putting me on this carp.

Tail snagging a carp is alot of fun in a tourney.

It was absolutely my priveledge to share the boat with Derek on Sunday. We did a lot of running and gunning looking for bigguns, rather that working and reworking a small number of spots that are known producers. Probably bad tournament strategy on my part, but that gave me the chance to introduce Derek to a handful of out-of-the-way spots that don’t get pounded like the tailwaters do.

A single digit air temperature start reveals all of the problems that cold weather boating brings out: boats stuck to trailers, dead batteries, motors that just won’t pee, ice knots in your line, etc etc etc. Once that warm sun start to hit your face, however, all became well.

Derek and I pitched and dragged ringworms for the most part, although late-day desparation found us doing a little vertical jigging to try to find a limit of legals. Our first decent walleye came to the boat around 2:30, and we landed it on a dragging run that saw 2 other fish come unbuttoned. Darn 3:00 weigh-ins!!! We were working a stretch of shallow sand that was about 5-6 degrees warmer than most of the other waters we fished. If I had been thinking more clearly, we would have spent much more time straining this area for our 5 legals before going on the quest for mrs big.

Well that’s my story. You can look for Derek and me again in the April IDA events. I’m lucky enough to be able to spend today and a bunch of days later this week back on the water, and I hope to use our tournament results as a guide to future success!
