is the water still low. you take some nice pictures thats for sure. do you see the river coming up drastically in the next three weeks. planning on making a trip up there the last week of march. how do you think the bite will be and do you think the spawn will happen by the end of march or early april.
March 3, 2003 at 9:28 pm #253466The water is still low. The spawn won’t happen in March. Never does. The water needs to warm up a good 12-15 degrees. I believe the “average peak spawn date” is mid April????? Can anyone verify this? Water temps need to be in that 46-54 degree temp…… Typically, the spring high water peaks around the 2nd or 3rd week of April. April 18 had the peak high water the last 2 years.
March 3, 2003 at 10:56 pm #253483as for water levels this spring…… man.. if I could predict that I would be in the weather biz!!….. there is NOT much snow up north right now….. soooo its the old if things dont change it should not be much of a flood this spring… but there are TOOO many factors to guess….
we could get a big pile of snow…..
we could bet a big rain storm….
the temps could go up real fast and melt everything in a couple of days….
and the odds of that is really 50/50… it will or it wont!…..
but dont worry…. you WANT the river to come up SOME…. if it comes up an average amount then thats perfect….. the fish will move up good and the water wont be super low and clear….. and fishing should be awesome this spring… there are SOOOOOO many good fish in this pool right now….. as good or better than ever…. in my experience…… I think many would agree with that….. the fish are there…. awesome numbers of real nice fish… great numbers of younger fish… and good numbers of big fish….. its ALL there right now…… fishing pool 4 should be dramatic this year…..March 4, 2003 at 12:16 am #253493I have a buddy that works for NASA’S weather division and based in maryland……he (and others) predict A very wet spring and water levels to match the “93 floods….A pay back for the mild winter…but then again I cook for a living and predict……. A wet/cold spring……or a dry/warm spring…..or just to cover my bases a sometimes wet with some dry days mixed in and some warm days with a fair amount of cool ones mixed in..
I always wanted to be a weather man….Howed I do?

Don’t they spawn at water temps in the 42 to 46 degree range? At any rate as for the water rise, there is not much snow here in the north yet. March is our biggest snow month. Hope the water conditions are not like the flood of ’93 as I experienced that on pool 17. Not much fun for most of that summer!!! Booked to fish with flick on Pool 5 in mid april and by the looks of his last report, it might be hard not to come down earlier!!!
Also the frost is very deep this year with the local energy companies trying to get new poles in the ground through 7′-9′ of frost near the roads. Septic systems and wells alike are freezing at an alarming rate.

March 4, 2003 at 6:00 pm #253580do you think fishing will be decent the last week in march if the weather cooperates. how have you been doing lately. do you fish much during the week or weekends.
March 4, 2003 at 9:02 pm #253595if you dont mind me asking how much is it for an a trip with him for a day.

I think he is $2 hundred something a half day. I know he asked me to send a deposit of $50. Last year we spent the last part of the day and into the evening with him. We literally waited until almost dark before we went out. I fish mostly after dark up here in northern WI. He was very accommodating. Then he got us off the river in some very exciting conditions. It was early April and as we headed down the river, bloody lightning started flashing every where. Just minutes before that, just cloudy darkness and a howling south wind throwing three footers up over the bow!!! Post to his email address and he’ll give you you the specifics for what you want.
