I hit P2 from 6-9pm on Wednesday and Thursday nights this week. I started fishing Pool 2 seriously in the fall of 2003. Early March on Pool 2 has given me several great nights and just as many zeros, and oftentimes they happen back-to-back. Almost a year ago exactly I got to photograph a humongous 31″ for Steve Dezurik. That 31″ capped a great night for Steve and after he left I caught 26″ and 27″ eyes along with several others. I returned the next night and did the same thing before trying other baits and areas … nothing!

Well I’m due for a good night because I pitched wingdams each of the last two nights and did poorly. On Wednesday I moved around a lot looking for fish and it didn’t pay off. I didn’t get a single bite! Last night I focused on three areas I have done well on historically. I caught two and lost one, none of them big (~17-18″) and all three hit like sissys. It was like I had snagged a wet sock (which is not an uncommon occurrance on the river … I caught a pair XXL women’s panties on Wed.) until they started fighting. That’s never a good sign…

For what it’s worth, I fished three great wingdams top-to-bottom and the only fish I found were a little deeper and hit a firecracker ringworm. The flow was slightly higher last night than it was on Wed, but not terrible. Believe me, I covered the spots thoroughly and threw everything I had at them. I’m convinced the fish were “off”, but that doesn’t mean anything going forward. They could turn on at any time.

There were a bunch of guys out fishing vertically (LipRipper-style!) on Wednesday. Any reports? I didn’t see DeZurik, but I know he’s been out in that new RiverPro… A little help, ol’ buddy?

I was on P2 this afternoon. Went out of 494, hit the airport for a while but too windy plus no fish so upriver I went. Got a smallie and what I’ll call a nice 19″ saugeye in the confluence area. The saugeye tagged a jig and minnow in 16′. It was mostly colored like a walleye but had only a faint tail spot and a distinct sauger body shape. I haven’t been out for a while so maybe I just forgot how to tell them apart. Saw a fair number of guys out and some fish landed by vertical jiggers.

Caught a few walleyes at the airport this afternoon. Some in 22′. Others in 18′. Not a great bite. No saugers for us but did see one caught.

Spent some time fishing current breaks after dark up in lillydale with no luck. It was a nice evening to be out.

that makes me feel a little better since you seem to be a pretty good stick. i was on the water by 5am friday and hit a bunch of wing dams and got skunked again. (i love being on the water but hate getting skunked!) have only caught 1 fish in the last 3 trips. i do ok in the fall but really struggle winter-spring.
hope you have better luck next time.

I fished P2 on Friday also. I started around 3:00 p.m. and dragged ringworms between wingdams but only caught a couple of rough fish. Towards dark I started pitching to wingdams until about 7:20 but did not catch anything. It was a very nice evening to be out as the wind died down but still enough breeze to easily see the ripple line.
