300′ line goes into effect

Just a reminder for all those fishing this weekend on the river . The 300′ line goes into effect on March 1 thru April 30. That means that there is no fishing above that point. This is an area that is protected for spawners. In ALma the sign on the east side is on the dam, brown with yellow writing on it. The other one on the west side is yellow, but I think it is broken down. THe one in Red wing is on the Minnesota side. Just a heads up I am sure the wardens will be out in full force.

Maybe a dumb question but do most of the walleyes spawn in the 300 ft. area or below. The only time I’ve seen a DNR boat collecting eggs was about 25 years ago and they were below the Y. At least thats what it looked like they were doing. Thanks

I would not say thats a dumb question…. I doubt anyone really knows what % of the spawn takes place right at the dam….. in fact in pools farther down most of the spawn takes place in the backwaters… John Pitlo has done tracking research that shows the fish may stage at the dam but usually drop down into backwaters to spawn…..
and the eggs drift free in the current so normally they DNR has a number of collecting sites…… I suppose at the Y must be one of them……
