It bit. Or at least I think it did. Jig was well into the mouth anyway. Hit a ringworm in 13′ of water. We absolutely SLAMMED the fish today. Lots of nice fish with a dandy mid-winter average of about 18″. Caught quite a few 19″ – 20″ saugers and a handful of walleyes over 20″ too. Topping out about 22″. Nothing huge…. but lots of fish. Most of the morning we were getting 3 – 4 fish per short drift. We quit at 2 PM feeling completely content and refreshed… it was exactly what this guy needed…. I hadn’t done any more than a couple hours in the boat at any one time for quite a stretch and hadn’t been on the water at all in weeks. I hooked up another cat… although this one was much larger and my 4Lb test mono was done for when my patience with this particular fish ran a bit thin…. plus this fish gave off that easy to spot “wide waggle” indicating the fish was snagged well back of the dorsal… likely in the tail. No fair snagging so I parted the line with a quick tug… but for that short amount of time I had ahold of her I could tell she was a true beast.
We cleaned up on electric blue/purples/grape in the afternoon and lighter/brighter colors in the early AM.
Hawg, Thanks for taking the pic for me and for the short-term loan of a real net. Bucktail Wayne carries a butterfly net with him for some reason!…lol If was fun watching you out in the channel vertical jigging today. We were “sneaky catching” fish inside the crowds and you were lapping the field out in the deeper water. Everytime I’d look over you guys would have another nice fish flopping on the surface and it looked like the rest of the boats got stuck with the dinks. You were doing something right for sure. Fishing’s funny… you guys switched from dark to light in the afternoon and we did the exact opposite to stay on the walleyes in the shallows? Interesting, yes?!
Man did it feel GOOD to be back on the water!…. woooHooo!
