I checked out the ramps on pool 2 this afternoon. Both the Hidden Falls and 494 ramps are iced in. Most of the river continues to be covered with ice. There are some sections that have opened up, but these are current areas or sections that get a lot of wind.

This first shot is the ramp at Hidden Falls. The ramp itself has not been used in a while and remains snow covered. (Not plowed at all since the last snowstorm) The river ice goes shore to shore. There was some open water about 200 yards upstream. Nothing but ice as far downstream as you can see. The parking area was plowed out.

The second shot is the 494 ramp. You can see that the city has removed the dock. The ice is very thick in the ramp area and continues on out to the main channel. It’s about as bad as it gets right now for pool 2.

If you are planning to fish pool 2 this weekend, bring your ice auger! Glad we have Evert’s open!

    The overcast skies . . . the gloomy trees devoid of leaves . . . THE ICE . . .

    How long ’til ice out?

good pics, Jon. March will be here soon, and things will be breaking up, that means river time. I may not get up to pools 2 or 3 for a few months, Pool 4 is where it’s at. and Evertt’s is where it is at on Pool 4. thanks for all the good work Steve. I’ll be down soon. Jack.

Thanks for the pics Jon, makes me sick to see this. I have got cabin fever so bad I am thinking about pitching some jigs to my mounts on my wall?
Looks like it may be a trip to red wing this week to get a fix of open water. Weather looks to be in the low to mid thirties in the the week here. This will help our pool 2 ice but it will need more than a couple days of warm weather to have an impact unfortunately.

    Come on Spring.

Any reports on the ice condition on pool 2 this week. Was hoping the wind and warmer temps might have something sturing.

I work in downtown St Paul. I can see the river from a window near my desk. The ice remains shore to shore pretty much through downtown and on past the airport to the RR bridge. Not much improvement since I posted this report on Friday.

We need back to back 40 degree days and some wind to loosen things up. The weather doesn’t look good with a forecasted high of 15 on Saturday.

I will assure you that when the day comes that it looks possible to open up the ramp at 494, I’ll be there with my flamethrower! (No kidding, I have one!)

On the bright side, I have just come down with a terrible illness….un-curable…contagious…. The only relief is a day in the boat. So Dinosaur and I are headed out of Evert’s tomorrow for a day on pool 4 while we wait for pool 2 to thaw out!! Lol.
