Pool 2

I haven’t read anything on Pool 2 as of late so I thought I’d share my results from last Sunday. With the warm weather at hand, my goal was to launch at the 494 launch and fish the airport area. I arrived at the launch and found the ice to be solid from the ramp to the river channel. I then turned to plan “B” and headed to the Hidden Falls launch. The ramp was in great condition but the fishing was poor. I fished areas from the locks down to the 35E bridge with nothing to show for it. I worked the sand flats with plastics and the deep holes with jigs and three ways with each method showing the same results. After talking to the one other boat on the river, I found I wasn’t the only snow covered fisherman with poor results although this didn’t make me feel any better.
Although the fishing was poor, it was still great to get back on the soft water!

    Thanks for the report Zim,

I noticed the river cleared up quite a bit through downtown and over to the airport over the last few days. Has been shore to shore ice for about 3 weeks. Was ice free today…the wind kept it open even, in this cold. May ice up again over the next few nights. It will probably be next to impossible to get in at 494 this next weekend.

Kind of surprised the bite was slow on the upper end. The fish should start stacking in up there by now. Good to hear you got out!

    Thanks for the update Ron,
Was there alot of ice in the lock area up by the dam?
Hopefully the weather turns around here quickly and we can get back out down by the 494 area. Those fish are probably getting lonely down there!

Thanks for the report Zim, Last year we started fishing up in that area about this time and I have been getting the itch. Would have been up there this past Saturday if we had not been doing some improvements initiatives planning with the RWWL.
As far as the 494 area, it is going to take more than a little turn in the weather to open that up again altough a good week in the 30’s would sure help.

I was surprised at the poor results also. I really wish the weather would have stayed nice so I could have redeamed myself before I posted but I guess that will just have to wait. The lock area was completely iced in but I did fish the edge of the ice near the current break. The surprising thing Sunday was that I didn’t mark very many fish on the locator. Even in the deap holes I maybe marked a couple of fish here and there.

Ive not done much fishing up that way at this time of year… normally the fish are concentrated in the deep holes down river until about march.. I was out that last 50 degree day we had just before the pool froze shut and it was great! better than the bite I had goin on pool 4 on saturday…..
then depending on when the snow melt hits the river.. they push up river in a hurry and according to the tracking study either stack at the dam or run up the Mn river……
thats when I switch to pool 4……
