I ahve heard from more than one angler that on both pools 9 and 10 trolling with three ways and plastics has been about the only way to consistantly hook into a limit of eaters lately. They have all said that vertical jigging is just not producing. Has anyone out there fished these pools lately? WHat have you found?

Hey Bob I spent the last 3 days on pool 6 the jig bit is not!! hapening. I did see 2 guys that were slow trolling jigs and getting fish. We also had one guy trolling 3 ways with hard baits and catching fish. I slowpulled live bait rigs tipped with minows and did very well . But agian I didnt see the people jiging doing much of anything. As soon as I found the bite I went down river to try to find better fish. I have pictures but have no idea how to get them on here .
January 31, 2006 at 1:56 am #416133There were two guys fishing the miss. by guttenberg last wednesday and they got a few on jigs but no one else was getting much either. I know i have had good luck on floaters as well.
January 31, 2006 at 1:29 pm #416207Hey guys, when you were trolling floaters with plastics or live bait, was any color hotter than others? I know a week ago pink and orange was working well. Most fish came out of 30-32 FOW. What depth did you hook up at?
January 31, 2006 at 7:46 pm #416332I was talking about floating jig heads with plastics or live bait on a three way rig.
February 1, 2006 at 12:25 am #416455I was using chartruese and orange. That was the main bite on the floaters.
February 1, 2006 at 2:06 am #416485i have been wondering about 3ways with plastics. makes sense. thanks guys. andy
February 1, 2006 at 9:29 pm #416679What do you gain by dragging plastics on a 3 way? Couldn’t you acomplish the same thing dragging jigs? Just curious, I’ve never tried it. I’ve only 3 wayed with bait and cranks.
February 2, 2006 at 1:08 am #416761I’ve never thought about 3-ways and floaters with plastic or a bare hook with just plastic on.Do you guys use a rig like this and does it catch fish?
February 2, 2006 at 1:12 am #416762Sorry guys I just now read up farther on the thread and I see some of you guys use this method. Interesting.
February 2, 2006 at 3:04 am #416799i saw some guys on the miss. a few weeks ago using a three way with the jig on the bottom as the weight then a floater above it. They were not dragging it though they were jigging it.
February 2, 2006 at 1:55 pm #416904honda75, a 3way with a jig and a floater/hook is a dubuque rig. Or a shot and a chaser, lol.

You can use a lighter jig head or plain hook on a 3 way. You can also keep some speed against a current with enough wieght, and stay in touch with bottom. Your leader lenght to the sinker can determine how far off bottom you put your jig/plastic
February 7, 2006 at 2:54 pm #418466ANYBODY TRY A CAROLINA RIG WITH PLASTICS, THOUGHT OF TRYING THIS A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO AND HAVENT HAD A CHANCE TO TRY IT, WOULD THIS IDEA GIVE THE PLASTIC MORE OF A NATURAL FLOAT THAT SEEMS TO BE MENTIONED QUITE A BIT AROUND HERE. WORKS FOR BASS BUT EVERYTHING WORKS FOR BASS
February 7, 2006 at 3:45 pm #418493
yup i have not this time of yr. i tryed this on the wing dams ,it was a slip sinker rig with a power bait on the hook, the bass guys call it carolina rig i call it a slip sinker rig, same thingFebruary 8, 2006 at 7:25 pm #419010Good topic I personally have had good success using plastics on my 3-ways.Threading plastics on aberdeen hooks and dragging with 3-ways. adding bead, floats etc above hooks there are lots of options and one of my go too,s where legal is using the dubugue rig I have had good luck on lakes ussually a 1/4 to 3/8ounce jig will be adequate for dragging or slow trolling and there are a ton of options here to hair jigs, jig and plastics or just bait on the trailer you can exsperment with baits, floats, abeerdeen hooks and plastics. The man given credit for inventing the dubuque rig said I never caught a fish on a sinker I have always remembered this and have created some unique rigs where legal
February 9, 2006 at 4:10 pm #419273Joe, I’m curious, who is credited with inventing the Dubuque rig? I agree with your quote. That jig will bring in way more fish than a sinker.
February 9, 2006 at 6:42 pm #419314I believe it is a guide out of dubuque called Jimmy O I might miss spell his last name but I will try Oberfoell
jagsPosts: 92February 10, 2006 at 8:19 pm #419636Your kidding? Jimmy O? He is a great guy and a great guide. Just plain and simple, fun to fish with. I did take a guide trip with him last spring (with another fishing buddy) and primarily was dragging 3 ways. We never did pull out a dubuque rig though. But it does sound like something he would say. “Easy fella, I see ya going on point, but give him a little time to eat before ya cross his eyes”.
February 10, 2006 at 10:59 pm #419687The “Dubuque Rig” predates Jimmy O by many years. Jim is a great fisherman, and a great guide. I don’t doubt that he may have said the thing about not catching fish on a sinker but I’m sure that he did not develope the idea of using a jig on the bottom line of a three-way rig. After a little research, I believe the idea was developed by Don Oliver in 1958 or 1959. Until then no one was trolling wing dams in the area, mainly because it wasn’t practical with the engines and boats they had at the time. In 1958 Don bought a new 18hp engine which he found would allow him to troll wingdams. Soon after that he started using jigs on the bottom of the three-way instead of the 2oz sinkers everyone was using at the time. He bought jigs to start but then talked the founder of Doit molds, a Mr. Bond, into making him a couple of custom 1oz walleye jig molds. Back then there was only a few people fishing walleye on the river in the Dubuque area. They all knew each other and shared information so it grew from there. Don told me that he paid $250.00 for that new 18hp and that it was a great engine for him. A lot has changed since then!
February 11, 2006 at 12:17 am #419701I know its a great rig if Don Oliver invented it my hats off to him I know Jimmy O uses the rig and the articles I have read sure got me to exspermenting Thanks for the research
