Man.. you guys that did not make it out must be hating life!.. it was just nice to be out fishing… wasnt the fastest action Ive ever had… but still darn good… me and my partner must have boated at least 30 fish 15″ and over… with many in the 18″ range… and a good showing from nice sized walleyes too…… so attached are pix….
we got bit on a little of everything.. but the best was a blue super doo you will see in the mouth of a couple of fish… bucktails pulled some fish, jig and minnow a couple of more…. very little on ringworms for us….. the blue doo was the deal….. and they have em on sale in the EFN tackle store.. this color has been hot for me off and on this entire cold water season.. and day in day out has been one of my best producers…. though today was its most dominate showing….

Absolutely awesome guys! Anyone that ever wants to know why we think the media guys are so dog-gone important to FTR…. here’s a great example. 2 hours after sun down and we have mulitple threads with a pile of pics from the day…. talking about hot colors, productive techniques backed with still MORE photos and talk of the “catch of the day!”

    fireflick,

Nice fish!! Haven’t been able to make it out for a while. I see superdoos were pretty productive for rivereyes and some others. Just wondering what the hot bait for you was? Were you casting or vertical jiggin? Plastic or hair? Minnows??

    Curious minds want to know

It is interesting to see how much enthusiasm there is when fishing pool 4 in the middle of winter. I was told the bite was “hot” on Friday 1/31 when there were only about a half dozen boats. On Sat 2/1 the bite was “good” but there were probably 40–50 boats so the fishing pressure was much greater. I don’t think it would have made much difference even if the bite was “bad”. What made this day special, was that many of us thought we would not be getting out for another month or more. We now have spring fever instead of cabin fever. Yes, it was a beautiful day and great to be out there – the good bite made it even better.

    oh man,

you guys are killin’ me with all these pics and reports. i was soooooooo looking forward to going out yesterday but then my friend (the one with the boat) canceled on me at the last minute. he said we could go out today. yeah right, not with the weather the way its supposed to be. a wintery mix of freezing rain and snow just isn’t fun to fish in.

    oh well, maybe next weekend

Nice pics guys! From just about everybody I talked to yesterday, it was a fabulous day!!! I made it out for the last hour and a half of the day and even managed to pull 30-35 fish myself. I had a limit of 15-17 inchers all in that hour and a half. I was casting 1/4 oz. dark green hairjigs to 6-8 feet of water. They were slamming them hard yesterday. I did not tip the hair with anything….wasn’t needed. For those of you wondering, I had 51 boats go through yesterday…..9 today. As of right now, 12:45, it is starting to snow/rain/sleet. BEAUTIFUL DAY!….Damn groundhog! Good day to all.

Yes, great day to be out for sure.

Thank you Mother Nature for lining up a nice day on a Saturday in the middle of winter. Especially after that cold snap you put me through!

As Dave G said, wouldn’t matter if the bite was good or bad….just a good cure for cabin fever! I feel much better today…whole new attitude.

A big thanks to Steve at Everts who had all the ramps open. No waiting to get in or out for us. February 1st in Mn/Wi, open water – open ramp! He busted butt all day. You should have seen the look on his face when he said “Talk to ya later I’m going fishin’…..been up since 5….I’m done!” Glad to hear you got into a good bite Steve. Sounds like we pulled out too soon!

I’m glad I listened to the weatherman today. Looking out the window at 2:45 and the snow is just starting to pile up. Would have liked to get out today again, but am glad I didn’t.

    hey guys,

just wondering if the bite held strong all day or did it slow down a bit in the middle of the day. if we get all this snow that there talkin’ about they might cancel school.

It was great to get out on the water again.Jon and I put a ton of fish in the boat on a lot of different baits Hair, ring worms, doos, and the best of the day by far was dubuque rigs with 2-3 ft leads with a plain hook.I took one walleye in the boat that spit up a half doz. minnows in my lap.We were getting eyes in depths of 20ft. plus.I was able to try out the new Rip shads by reef runner. These baits have a great finish and fantastic tight wobble and should be killers this May.Buyer Beware though, out of 4 baits I experimented with not one ran true out of the box. With a little work 5-10 minutes per bait I was able to get them to run true.Great day to be on the water.

Today was nowhere near as nice… but I snuck out with Steve Vick from about 4 PM – dark as a result of all the talk on the board from yesterday. We took one of the little rental boats and tossed anchor on a couple spots before finding the fish. Once we found them, on the sand bar along the WI shoreline below the rollers, don’t ask me how deep it was as we were in a rental with no electronics (I’d guess about 18′), we really started to spank fish. No big fish… “just fish.” But it was a good time. At the peak of things I had 6 fish in 6 casts, mostly walleye, and Steve and I tag-teamed for 5 “doubles” out of all the fish we caught collectively before we split as the sun was setting due to we had no lights on the rental we used.

We primarily used hair and super doos. Both worked equally well with dark colors really out-performing anything else we tried. The black hair with a little fuscia on the belly was good as was the black/pearl and black/green doos. 1/4 ounce heads were enough to control the baits, even with that cold upstream wind we had in our face.

Lots a’ fun. Too bad the weather looks to be taking a turn for the worse!

Hey Dave G……How did that KNB scent work that HAWG gave you? Notice any difference, or didn’t you get a chance to ue it? Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks.

    Steve,

I put a few drops of KNB garlic scent on a purple super doo and found that it did attract fish — to the other end of the boat. I was in the back of the boat and had it on my presentation for about an hour and did catch a couple fish on it. During that time, Kerry, who was in the front of the boat, was pulling them in one after the other; of course Kerry always seems to do that. I guess it wasn’t the day for garlic (at least for me) but I was impressed with the holding power of the sent as the plastic really smelled for the whole hour I had it on. Finally a snag decided it liked the garlic jig the most.

The big fish of the day for our boat was a 21” sauger (pictured & released) was caught by me while using the garlic scent, but it bit on my other rod that had an unscented super doo on it.

Both Ken and Kerry were doing so well with what they were using they didn’t even try the scent. I don’t know about my partners; not only did I have to run the boat, I even had to find out what they “weren’t” biting on

I will continue to experiment with the scent throughout the year.

    Dave G
