Joel (Drewsdad) invited me along for a late January outing on P 2 of the good ‘ol Mississippi. Normally this time of year I’m out chasing gills or whatever else is biting through the ice. Quite a winter we’re having for sure.

Joel is first a walleye guy, then a “if it tugs I’ll fish for it” type of guy and of course I prefer the sweet smell of a flathead cat over just about anything…’cept my wife. ‘Cause she’s sweeter! (ya reading this honey?) Neither one of us has fished the Great P2, but by golly, armed with Steve DeZuriks’ latest report we figured the worst we could do is …get skunked.

While Joel was waiting for me at the launch, he was check by one of our local CO’s. I was a little surprise to hear this considering it’s late January, but I guess the rumors of CO’s hibernating are untrue.
Off we went looking for a likely wing dam to find Mr. Piggy. Checked out a couple with the depth finder and they just didn’t look good to him. I keep after Joel to drive his Lund closer to the stumps and snags. After the fourth or fifth time of saying politly, “Brian, we are not after catfish”… I caught on. We motored up stream to a great looking spot and I told Joel this is IT! This time he yelled at me…I said “Sorry Joel, walleyes right?” He shook his head as we move closer to the spot he had picked out.

This was purrrrfect for eye’s! We knew there would be a Mr. Pig hear for sure. We both started casting H20 jig heads with Joel using dark ring worms and I selected a lighter color BfishN Tackle ring worm. Joel told me to use a heavier weight…but I couldn’t find any 4 oz no-rolls…so I used a 3/32 oz (I think?).
The kid changed up Ringworms to a lighter green color for some reason…one cast and WHAM! He’s fighting a LITTLE 23 incher to the boat. Measurement, photo and a quick release and we were back to fishing. I took a quick time check and at 5:10 we were thinking…time for a couple more!

Well, nothing happen until 5:50, when we notice a boat with three fellas moving in on our spot. I figured the better be CO’s or they were going to be getting an ear full for moving in so close. Yup, three Mr. DNR’s come to check us out. Once they looked over our fishing licenses, I was scolded by one CO for not having my license signed. It was at this time Mr. CO started Boating Laws 101 class. Apparently sunset was a 5;12 tonight. We were informed that although our anchor light was up, we didn’t put it up at sunset, which is the law.

    Cha-Ching!

I was a bit surprised when they asked Joel for his autograph, I didn’t know he was that famous! So after checking for the PFD’s and a little chit chat off they went leaving us a bit of memorabilia.
We fished for a bit and decided it was time to go in anyway.

We had a photo of our $100+ fish…and a short lesson in boating 101.

Great Evening of fishing and learning Joel! We’ll have to do it again…with the lights on!

Any ticket you get handed these days other than parking is going to cost $100 or more.

These guys did not have the fish in the livewell.. guaranteed.

Nice fish Joel! I feel your pain. I’ll be willing to bet the boat will be lit up like christmas next time.

Next time try throwing Brian overboard and make a run for it when they go to save him

So was one of the three CO’s that approached you on the river the guy who was at the ramp, or were there four of them down there? You guys had your anchor light on but got nailed anyway becasue you turned it on 2 minutes late?
It sounds like these guys didn’t make their quota for January so they were going to hound you until they found something.

Well, as near as I can figure we turned the anchor light on 30 minutes after sunset. They came by 10 -15 minutes later..

I doesn’t matter if they made the quota or not…WE were in the wrong. Light should have been on at sunset…

…I’m surprised how light it is at sunset!

The photo of Joel was taken at 5:09…

PDL…were not exactly sure the cost of the ticket, because each county has there own fees. I’m sure it will be over $100.

Looking back, I know enough to have said something or grabbed the light and turned it on earlier…

I would have been the first person complaining, if I would be boating down the river and saw a boat with it’s lights off..

OK let me see if I understand this…I can legally shoot a 30-06 half an hour past sunset but if I’m in a boat I better have my anchor light on BEFORE that? Only in Minnesota.

Brian, the only reason I’m hammering on this is that there is a lot of light out after official legal sunset. Enough light that the state trusts me to shoot a high powered rifle!

But OK if I’m ever on P2 in my new boat ( oops forgot I won’t do that any more) I’ll for sure have the lights on.

I hear ya Roots. I struggled with this last night as did Joel. I thought it was a “bad” ticket because we did have the light on well before the CO’s came up to us. The only two times I looked at my watch was when Joel released the 23 incher at 5:10 and when the CO’s asked if we knew when sunset was 5:50. I’m guessing that we had the light on around 5:35…

I would have thought a warning would have been called for…

But on the other hand…we didn’t have the light on at sunset, which is the law…

    Ticket issued…no complaints.

Like any other law, if I don’t agree with it…I should comply until I can get it changed. It’s the American way!

On a lighter note…you should have seen Drewsdad’s face when I told the CO’s we had to cut up that 23 to get it in the live well….

Now that was funny…unless you were Joel!

    Nice fish Joel!!!

Since most of us don’t pay much attention to the exact moment of sunrise/sunset, I guess we should just leave the lights on all the time.

Unbelievable…thanks for the heads-up! Wasn’t aware that the law was sooooooo strict on that point!
Wardens were following the “letter” of the law, not the “spirit” of the law in MHO!

Well you can guess I’ll be putting those lights on earlier from now on. I was just really surprised I didn’t get a warning. I certainly was in the wrong; but the punishment seems a bit harsh. Live and learn.

I blame it all on that hard south wind! We were already working around 2 anchor ropes (that should have been behind us instead of in front of us) And I kept putting off putting the stern light on because it would have been another obstacle to fish around……….. I’m new at this!

Anyhow! The good news is I got my first official wingy/ringy walleye. And it was a decent one to boot! And sharing a boat with Brian is always a pleasure!

What they were doing was watching you from a distance with binocs or night vision scope. Probably hoping to catch you poaching. I do appreciate their work in that area. However, after checking you out and finding you were only in violation of a light law and not endangering anyone on the water, I’ll agree a verbal or written warning would suffice.

The CO’s do run enforcements on the river early in the year from now through March. (Only to disappear off the face of the earth for the rest of the year…) One thing I know they will bust you for is expired boat tags. Easy thing to forget about.

    Joel,

I think you should replace the crappie icon with the walleye pic on this forum…that is a great shot and a nice fish!!!

From the location of the bouy in the background of that photo, it looks like you were really close in to the shallow stump field…is that true?

I’m definitely getting out on Sunday!!!

John they did have night vision glasses…and they could have glassed us prior…but they came from a boat across the river from us. Those boys didn’t have any pfd’s on board. This may have lead to the reason they didn’t get to us earlier…and not that the CO driving was rude…he just didn’t seem like a happy camper when we arrived.

    Hey Marty!
We were by the airport. That’s all I know. I also agree that the pic above would be better than the crappie. However, I am hoping to put a 10+ lber pic for an icon soon!

I think I am going to lay low this weekend. Fishing gets expensive

My wife just said she bets if you get to spend $100 on fishing, Janine gets to spend $100 on shopping.

Janel says that means she is going to spend $100 on shopping too…

You and Briank are going to cost me $ too!!!!

    What’s your number…I don’t think I’ve met your wife yet….

I think we did well out there Joel. First time, bad wind from the wrong way…done fishing at 6… I’de call it a good day.

Us guys never count the cost of fishing anyway…if we would…a McFish is pretty cheap!

You are so right BK! If we started thinking about the money before we did things we’d all be vegetarians and play scrabble for kicks or we would drink herbal tea and do the crossword puzzle

coupla years ago when Dalton (my Alumacraft DL-X, ref Red Green Show)was new, Washington Co. pulled me over on St. X at Afton for lite up but off at sunset. I managed to convince them that I just plain forgot to flip the switch and they went along with just a warning ticket. I think the “CroiX” of the matter is ya gotta act dumb but verrry cooperative.Be careful down around the Kinni, everybody, Wisc DNR has docks down there and they’re pretty fussy about having your batteries covered.
Thanks for the welcome and to the Angler of the Year for helping get registered!
