Hoping to hit the river this weekend and am wondering what the ramp conditions are at 494 or S. St. Paul. Anyone know if there’s much ice floating the main river? Also, if the ramp is in need of some work, I’m willing to put in some hours Saturday morning to chop ice or whatever it takes so we can all go fishing. Anyone else…… Thanks.

Any one have a link to the camera that was set up down there north of the bridge?

    Oh??? I didn’t know Rocky owned a boat. Maybe he’s going “ice-fishing”?

I’m sure it’s nothing that I couldn’t take care of with my spud and a little creative trailer-backing. If there’s only an inch or two I can usually smash through it with my trailer lights. That reminds me of my plan to weld something around/out from the lights to keep them from breaking again this winter… Another summer project I failed to complete!

My guess, 494 ramp its pretty nasty with the last couple nights of near or below zero. Starting this weekend the next four days look pretty respectable.

I am planning to be down on Pool 2 around noon or earlier on Saturday to spend all day if needed opening the ramp up.
Anyone care to help me out? Chisels, shovels, ramp salt, heat torch, etc…. Bring whatever you got. I am thinking of bringing a couple adult beverages and make some fun out of it….oh yeah, throw in some fishing gear to boot when we are all done!

    Mark,

I spoke too soon. MAnagement committee at home mentions we have some things going on about midday! Looks like I may not be down there until later on Saturday or Sunday morning.

Unfortunately, I already made plans to hit up P4 this weekend. I look forward to taking advantage of all your hard work next week!

I know the conditions can change in a hurry. A little sun, a little wind….. But as of 4pm Friday P-2 is froze over shore to shore at the airport! It does not look good as the curent temp is 11 degrees and it’s getting dark.

So…. Did anyone get out to clear the 494 ramp or should I bring my spud bar tonight?

I got down there Saturday late afternoon with boat in tow.
Plenty of ice there, but it looked breakable. Looked like someone had tried Saturday sometime and got about 30 feet out from the ramp and came back. Saturday, it looked like about 75 feet of ice. I backed the boat in part way and started chopping away. I gave up pretty early. If I would of had another body there, We could of got in without a doubt. A little bit of work, but definately doable. Once you get the boat in, breaking it with the boat should go pretty smooth….(as smooth as expected anyway! ). I forgot my salt, I was planning to dump a couple handfuls on the ramp surface to keep it somewhat clean. I will be down Tuesday evening to have at it.

    John,
Let me know how it looks today if you get down there. Good luck.

Didn’t make it last night — I decided to wait for tonight based on the weather report. But now that we have 20mph winds … I think I’ll continue waiting for a better opportunity. I sure wish the weather man would get his act together! Who knows, maybe I’ll swing by to clear the ramp and hope that the weather cooperates.

Based on today’s weather and the next 8 days or so…I am going to hold off on trying to get the ramp in working order. Highs in the teens over the weekend and into next week. I am afraid whatever we get done now, will be lost in the days ahead.

    C’mon spring!

Just for giggles I went down and looked at the ramp today. You are going to need a skidloader. A whole bunch of plowing from the last snowfall was pushed down the ramps. I don’t think shovels will get the job done. Unless you got a lot of guys, time, and strong backs.

The photo from the bridge cam does not look to bad. Looks down right pleasent. Any one got a photo of the ramp to see how bad it is?

I stopped down yesterday after work. There is a shelf of pretty think ice out about 35-40 yards. The snow on the ramp was not my main concern.

Not saying it can’t be done, but it would take a lot of work to get it open. And a day like today, I’m sure there is someone nuts enough to do it!

DeeZee and Alvinmack are pretty quiet today…..

I think the help of a trusty Skihl chainsaw and a couple tanks of gas might get somewhere for the ice. As for the ramp snow/ice…..have not seen it, so not sure what were up against.
