went out with my brother at 494 ramp and fished wingdams for the first time this year. still have yet to have one of the piggies pound a ringworm/hair jig like some of the pro staff swear by, but i did get a nice 4lb fish that was as fat as a football slam a rogue in about 3feet of wather on the front side of the wing dam…this is when the excitement started. I forgot my landing net (you know where this is going) and I tried to gill him. Right as I stuck my hand down, he twitched, burying the front treble hook in my left hand on the top of my thumb. Thankfully my brother helped me get the fish, off and I performed surgery. Pushed the barb throught with the pliers, and cut it off. First time I have ever done that, and don’t plan on doing it any time again soon.

I saw someone do that, except the hook went under the thumbnail. You could see the barb of the hook through his nail . Still gives me the eebee jeebee’s.

HAd the same thing happen the good part was it was a brand new shad rap so it didn’t hurt when I had my 83 year father pull it out. That was the scary part having him remove it. Still remember when i was 10 and left a rapala tangled in the anchor line. He decided to anchor and was letting the rope go through his hand you can imagine a 3 hook rapala going through your whole hand. Ouch !!!only time I saw tears coming to my dads eyes due to an injury.

Along those same lines, years ago a friend and I were water-skiing and he’s not too organized, if you know what I mean, and had a rapala snagged in the ski rope. Well, there I am floating in the middle of lake letting the rope slide through my hand and waiting for the handle to come around when all of a sudden this rapala snags me! Our relationship was real touch and go after that one, but I am glad to say I finally got even with him and we’re friends to the end!

This is bringing back memories of the super-shadrap i had piercing my hand…. rear trebles in hand, front trebles firmly inbedded in the mouth of a fiesty pike

Anyone ever see the video of a guy fishing, and he takes a huge crank hook in the chin, then to continue fishing he takes a pliers and rips the the hook with lure still attached back out….. that was cool!

Friend of mine borrowed my car to take a young lady home. He jumped into the back seat and she impaled her butt on my wally diver, the other hook was buried in the seat leather of course. He drove back to my house with her semi naked in the back seat stuck tight. I had to snip off the lure with side cutters then push it through her butt and snip it off. It was there last outing but I run into her 30 years later every now and then and she always tells me to shut up. Memories………

Thats funny, as I have never put one in past the barb…most pro’s learn from their mistakes.

Glad to hear you got yours out easily…now you will always have a painful reminder to bring the net.

There is a better way to do this than pushing the barb through and cutting it off, I can not explain it very well as I have only seen it done once at the FLW this year, maybe someone else can jump in here and explain it better than I can anyway here is what I saw……

The first step is to cut off any barbs that are not stuck in the hand.

Second step is you loop a string around the hook that is imbedded in the hand, the guy that I saw do this used a landyard.

Third step and this is the part that I do not 100% understand they push on the hook without pushing the barb though the hand, which way they push on the hook I am not sure.

Fourth step while still pushing on the hook yank the hook straight out with the landyard. I guess you can use fishing line too but it needs to be a very strong line like braided line.

The guy that I saw this done to was very nervous about it at first but after it was all over he was very surprised and said it did not hurt at all. Maybe some one knows of a diagram out there some where that shows how this is done.

When you “pop” the hook out this way, put pressure aqainst the hook so it pushes the barb away from the flesh, then just give one quick pull on the hook with the line and it will pop out very painlessly. The key is appplying pressure to the hook in such a way as to open up the flesh away from the barb, I’ve done this a few times and it works great and have gone on to fish with very little if any pain or wound in what initially looked very ugly….also it is a big help to have two guys, the guy with the hook in can hold down the hook to open up the wound and your partner can jerk the the hook out with the line, please disconnect the hook from the lure before doing this..

    Nose piercing partys…

(never slap a skeeter with a 10/0 hook in your hand.)

Old pictures but…I thought it fitting….

Had a chance to try that method and did everything as the book says but they dont deal with the what to do when the guy passes out part lol. Lucky that there is plenty of cold water to splash in there face. It didnt work and we ended the day at the e ward local hospital they got it out in a jiffy with no further fainting.
