Yesterday, my dad and I decided to head to Lake Pepin. First off, we tried Hok-Si-La Campground Park point from depths of 8 feet to 32 feet. No bites. Next, we tried the rocks next to the Hok-Si-La boat landing including depths from 4 feet to 16 feet. No bites, once again. Next on our list was Hanson’s Harbor and to follow the break line down to Long Point. By now the wind was really howling and it was getting very rough. Still no bites! We packed up the boat and headed to Alma.
Instead of launching the boat in Wisconsin, we launched it at the new boat landing just south of the Alma dam on the Minnesota side, on West Newton Road. It’s a small boat landing and it’s a little on the steep side, but it sure beats driving all the way to the Alma landing in Wisconsin. We headed up to the dam next to where the barges go through, about 100 feet from the dam. We dropped the anchor in 13 feet of water, so that we were right on the drop off. There were a lot of boats next to the dam, spread out all the way across the river. We fished here for about 4 hours and almost every boat was catching some nice Saugers and Walleyes. Shortly after we were there, one guy in a little boat drove right up to the dam and back trolled with a gold jig head tipped with a minnow right on the same drop off we were fishing. I have never seen someone catch so many fish in such a short amount of time. My dad caught two keeper Saugers and one more that was too small to keep. I got skunked and I have never been skunked this year as many times as I have been out. Meanwhile, the guy in the little boat left after about one hour with his limit. We were fishing in the same area as the guy, using the same setup and bait, but we just couldn’t produce like that guy did.
